Cell Analogy Collage Project – Honor’s Biology Project

Now that you have learned about the organelles in a cell, you need to think of an analogy, comparing the cell and it’s organelles to something of your choice. This project should be on paper LARGER than notebook paper, and should be in full color.

Instructions for CELL ANALOGIES COLLAGE

This project challenges students to make original and appropriate functional analogies between cell structures and everyday objects. Students will make a “3D” plant cell in class (8" X 12"). Students will mount the model in the center of a full sheet of poster board (Students will need to provide their own poster board). Students will then choose a theme for their analogies and frame their 3D plant cell model with description of each cell structure and their analogy. Each analogy will need to have a picture (internet, magazine, etc…) and a written description as to why it is the analogy for the cell structure. When the collages are displayed, each one is different. Students enjoy reading one another's analogies and displaying their own wit and ingenuity. By reading and discussing different analogies, students become familiar with the structure and function of cell parts.

1. Plant cell model must include the following structures and must be mounted in the middle of a full sheet

of poster board:

plasma membrane cell wall cytoplasm

chloroplast chromatin (DNA) nucleus

nucleolus mitochondria golgi apparatus

large vacuole ribosomes rough endoplasmic reticulum

smooth endoplasmic reticulum

2. Identify your model as a eukaryotic plant cell. Make sure that your poster is labeled with a large heading that includes your type of cell, name, period, and date.

3. Choose a theme for all your analogies such as a(n) airplane, car, ship, factory, school, house, etc…. All your analogies must relate to this overall theme. The city analogy cannot be used. Find a magazine, newspaper picture, or an internet picture of an everyday object which has a similar function (or use) as each cell structure. Write an analogy to show the similarity between the cell part and the everyday object. Be sure to explain the reasoning behind your analogies. Analogy should be written in the following form:

The ___(insert organelle)____ is like a __(insert everyday object)____ because it ____(insert organelle function)_the same way the (insert everyday object function)____.

Example: The nucleus is like a brain because it controls and coordinates the activities of the whole cell in the same way the brain controls and coordinates activities of the body.)

4. Paste the pictures of everyday objects around the 3D model. Label the pictures with your neatly typed analogies (at least 16 point font)

5. Using arrows or a numbering system, identify your analogy and picture with the proper organelle in the model.

GRADING POLICY: (Project worth 100 pts)

A - Neat, complete, all original analogies, go with theme, all organelles, complete sentences, and typed

B - Neat, complete, all analogies – missing one thing from above

C - Complete, no original analogies and missing pictures of every day objects.

D - Messy, incomplete, and incorrect analogies

F - Too messy for words, wrong, incomplete.
