Virtual Field Trips

Virtual Field Trips

When you begin to create your own Virtual Field Trip (VFT), start by selecting a social studies topic of your choice. VFT topics are often places to visit. Here are two examples:

Places to visit:

Tour Colonial Williamsburg

Tour Washington, D.C.

After you select a place to visit, it is important that you find additional sites that can enhance your students’ virtual experience even more. Here are three different websites that could be used together to begin to create a VFT for 6th grade social studies students on Ancient Egypt:

Tour the Great Pyramid

Tour of a mummy

Interact with a mummy

Visit the Nile River

Once locating a variety of internet resources, it is time to create a PowerPoint presentation that will allow you to be a guide for students as you take them on your tour.

Here is an example of one that is completed:

Use this above example to identify ways that the author:

1. Established desired student outcomes (objectives)

2. Identified ways that the author established a sense of “being there”

3. Included many different primary documents (photos) to supplement the text

4. Embedded online tours to have students virtually experience the location

5. Created a PowerPoint presentation to combine all of the above to make a VFT.
