He was always praying and giving thanks to God. We can easily prove this by simply reading the opening lines of his letters. What strikes me is that he ministered to so many people, he was under such massive persecution, underwent tremendous difficulty and trial, and yet he remained focused on the Good News of Jesus Christ, loving others and sharing Jesus with as many people as possible. Paul died to self, and he lived for Christ. In this journey of dying to self, I have a long way to go. How about you? What areas do you still struggle to die to self? List them here. What does dying to self & living for Jesus look like in your life right now? There are few things that will make more difference in our life than an attitude of praise and thanksgiving. Let’s jump ahead to Colossians 2 for a moment. Read verse 7, what picture does Paul draw with his words about thankfulness? What kind of thankfulness are we to experience? Are you overflowing with thankfulness right now? If so, pour our your heart in praise in the space below. If not – pour our your heart & ask God to well up that kind of thankful heart so much that it not only fills you up, but causes gratitude to spill over into every other part of your life…and even splashes a little on the people around you!Day 2: Faith, Love & Confident HopePlease handwrite Colossians 1:4-5 on your provided pages. Read each of the following scriptures, make note of what the Holy Spirit reveals to you about the relationship of faith, hope and love:Romans 5:2-5 1 Corinthians 13:13Galations 5:5-6Ephesians 4:2-51 Thessalonians 1:31 Thessalonians 5:8Colossians 1:4-5 makes up one complete thought; read it one more time. If you remember from our bible study session on Tuesday, we said that Hope was joyful & confident expectation. When is the last time you gave that kind of hope to what God has reserved for us in Glory? Would you characterize your belief and hope of heaven as CONFIDENT? Explain why. The hope we’re talking about here is the kind of joyful anticipation you probably remember feeling on Christmas morning as a child before you were allowed to go look what was under the Christmas tree. Are we THAT ready for Jesus’ Return? Are we THAT fired-up about our citizenship in Heaven? We should be! It will be THAT awesome!!!Day 3: A Life Changed by GracePlease handwrite Colossians 1:6 Our lives are changed by God’s wonderful grace and by knowing Him through His Word. It is a right understanding of who we are in comparison to our Holy God that breeds a sense of humility and brokenness and destroys our pride. Pride stands against God. Brokenness & humility falls at Jesus’ feet and worships Him. Read through these comparisons. As you read, in the LEFT hand column, please place a “V” for victory to praise God for enabling you to overcome in that area. Please put an “F” for something you sense The Lord highlighting for you to focus on changing. Romans 2:4 tells us that it is His kindness that leads us to repentance. Repentance = a changed life. The victory of a changed life is worth any amount of pain in getting there…and as I soak my own feet in the epsom salt of God’s grace, I’m reminded that bruised toes only hurt a little while! Humble Spirit Proud Spiritrealizes how much grace God gives me, allows me to give much grace to others focuses on failures of others, withholds grace; unforgiving focuses on the Lordfocuses on myself, whether self-hate or self-worship…either is pridecompassionate, esteeming othersself- righteous, critical spiritdependent upon the Lord, readily admitting a deep need for Him dailyindependent, self-sufficient, difficulty acknowledging a need for Jesusyield my right to be rightmust prove I’m rightmeek spirit, does not demandclaims my own rights, demandingself-giving of my time, my rights & my reputationself-protecting of my time, my rights & my reputationmotivated to serve othersmotivated to be servedmotivated to be faithful & to help others be successful along the waymotivated to make my own name famous, no matter what the costdesires to meet the needs of others first and trusts God will meet minedesires to meet my own needs first, no matter whatamazed God would use me at all, rejoices with others' victoriesdriven to be recognized, hate to be overlookedI know I don't deserve anything, no "entitlement" syndrome"This (person/employer/etc...) is lucky to have me & my gifts"humbled by how much I have to learn, willing to learn moreconfident in how much I know, don’t care to learn from othersmore concerned with others, easy to pleasemore concerned with how things affect me, hard to pleasewilling to risk loving others intimately; going the extra milenot willing to risk myself for another’s sake; keep others distantDay 4: Learning from Faithful ServantsPlease handwrite Colossians 1:7We know from our first 2 bible study sessions on Colossians that Epaphras started the church in Colossae, he brought a report of how they were doing to Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome, and that he was also considered a beloved co-worker and a faithful servant of Jesus Christ. Who, (like Epaphras did for the believers in Colossae) in your own life has influenced your walk with Jesus? Explain how…I wonder if you might consider writing a note of gratitude to this person this week for what they have meant to you and your relationship with Christ. Overflowing thankfulness has a way of encouraging others and spurring them on in the faith!I think it’s so cool that Paul calls Epaphras a “Beloved” co-worker & “Faithful Servant” of Christ. With so many opportunities for dissention when in the body of Christ, the way we interact with fellow servants either represents the heart of God or it doesn’t. With that, I want to ask you a very bold question: 1. When you are working with others – would they be willing to call you “Beloved”? Why or why not?The ultimate Servant was Jesus Himself, v. 7 says that the Colossians learned the Good News from Epaphras. My question is: How are you allowing The Lord Jesus to teach you on a daily basis? Day 5: A Holy Spirit-Given LovePlease handwrite Colossians 1:8Agape. If you’ve been around Christians long or heard many sermons, you have likely heard this word. If not – then allow me to introduce you! If you remember from our Tuesday morning session, Agape love is God’s kind of love. The kind that Paul describes in detail in 1 Corinthians 13:4-13. Look that up, then we’ll look at a few more key scriptures in helping us to fully grasp this love the Holy Spirit gave the Colossians. 1 Corinthians 13:4-13 - Please list here what Love (Agape) is/does & is not/does not do:Love IS/DOES:Love is NOT/does NOT:Each of these verses contains the same Greek word for LOVE, you guessed it: Agape. Below each verse write what you learn about this kind of LOVE:Romans 5:5 Galatians 5:22 Matthew 22:36-40Holy Spirit, we ask You to give us this genuine agape love for You and for others; and enable us to live it out every single day by Your power! ................
