Tips for Creating an Organizational Chart

Basic Techniques ? Click inside the boxes to add text. ? To add additional boxes in your chart, select a box and then click on the drop-down arrow next to "Insert Shape."

Getting the Boxes in the Right Places

When adding to an organizational chart, creating additional boxes in the right places can be confusing. To add a shape, make sure that you select the box you want to add the new shape under or next to, then click the arrow next to "Insert Shape" (see picture above).

? Coworker--will place the shape next to the selected shape and connect to the same superior.

? Subordinate--will place the new shape below and connect it to the selected shape.

? Assistant--will place the new shape below the selected shape with an elbow connector.

For example: Tom and Sally used this feature to create their family tree. Tom and Sally have three children, as indicated in Figure 1 (below). To add Kelly, their fourth child, click on the "Cindy" box and insert a Coworker. Then their oldest child, Krista got married. To add her husband Steve, click the "Krista" box and insert an Assistant. A year later Tom & Sally had their first grandchildren ? twins! To add Amanda and Andrew, click on the "Krista" box and add two Subordinate shapes. The resulting chart is displayed in Figure 2.
