Create Your Own Country Project

Create Your Own Country Project

Hello Students,

We have our first official history project! The Task: To create your own country and begin to develop your own culture. You will be historians, cartographers, government officials, and tourist agents! You will have three days in class to work on the project. You may also work during community time and after school. If you are interested in meeting during community or after school, please let me know so that I can set a space aside for you to work. The rest of the project will have to be done on your own time.

The due date for the project will be October 25th. We will be holding a cultural fair where you will present your country to your parents, friends, and school officials. I will give information on that at a later time.

The first item you have to create is your country’s map. Here is a list of items that should be included and you should keep in mind:

REQUIRED ELEMENTS FOR YOUR COUNTRY MAP

• compass rose

• country boundaries

• country name

• capital city

• five cities

• scale of miles

• landforms -- (at least five different ones)

• icons to show five natural resources found in the country

• neatly color the map

OTHER REQUIRED ELEMENTS:

• Your county’s flag and the meaning behind it.

• Create a fact sheet or an almanac page for the imaginary country. This sheet might present a wide variety of information and statistics about the country. You may find examples of fact sheets from the CIA website.

• List of customs and important holidays.

• Decide what kind of government your country will have.

• Invent a currency for the country and create a chart to show equivalencies between the country’s currency and U.S. dollars.

Optional Items that will enhance your project:

• Create graphs to show information related to the imaginary country (for example, populations of the largest cities, population or income growth over the last century, or value of goods produced by major industries). Students can use art supplies to create colorful graphs, or they might use graphing software or you may go to .

• Write brief interviews with citizens from different parts/cultures within the country.
