Course Description: This is one of two theme related literature-based integrated courses focused on the study of world literature and designed for advanced students who read above grade level. This course includes the study of world literature from diverse cultural writings. In each genre, historical background, literary devices, content, style, and cultural diversity are studied. Public speaking, various forms of compositions, and standardized test preparation are integrated into the semester’s study. Students are to improve grammar and usage skills through guided writing. Emphasis is placed on the development of critical and analytical thinking skills through classroom discussion and frequent compositions. Full-length works, vocabulary study, writing, and creative expression are the focus of this course.

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

Notes:

*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.

|STUDENT PROGRESS |Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester.  The progress of students |

| |shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate |

| |interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH. |

|ACADEMIC INTEGRITY |Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying |

|HOMEWORK |Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience.  Homework is at all times an |

| |extension of the teaching/learning experience.  It should be considered the possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and |

| |returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB. |

|MAKE-UP WORK |When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the |

|DUE |student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the |

|SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS |Lakeside High School Make-up Work Policy: To receive full credit, students may take one (1) day to make up missing work per missed day of |

| |school (This means an excused absence). |

| |PAY ATTENTION TO DUE DATES: Late homework and classwork is eligible for half credit only. Late papers and projects will be docked ten |

| |points per day late. |

| |DROP DEAD DUE DATE: Absolutely no late work will be accepted beyond Friday, May 12th. |

| |BE ON TIME: Students will be on time for class. Ms. Davis will adhere strictly to the school attendance policy, which means that no one will|

| |enter the classroom after the bell rings without a pass. |

| | |

| |DRESS FOR SUCCESS: Students will adhere to the DeKalb County dress code found in the Code of Conduct (p. 59-60). |

| |NO CELLPHONES OR OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Students will refrain from using technology such as cell phones, iPods, or tablets etc. while in |

| |the classroom. |

| |NO FOOD OR DRINKS: Students will refrain from bringing food or drinks into the classroom. |

| |BE RESPECTFUL OF YOURSELF AND OTHERS: Students will refrain from behaviors that are disruptive to the learning environment. These behaviors|

| |include but are not limited to speaking when others are speaking, being off task, or being unprepared. |

| |Breaking these rules will result in consequences. |

| |1st offense: verbal warning. |

| |2nd offense: notify a parent/guardian. |

| |3rd offense: detention. |

| |Further offenses will result in administrative referral. |

|MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES |Students are required to bring one composition book to use for daily work. Students will also need a plentiful supply of pens, pencils, and |

| |paper. I also recommend students use a 3-ring binder to keep up with class materials. |
