Summer Reading 2017 Registration materials for readers and non-readers will be available in the Children's Room from May

30 through July 31.Children who reach their reading goals by August 15 will receive a reading certificate, a FREE book, some coupons and be entered into a drawing for a fifty-dollar gift certificate!

After reading the first book, each child can have his/her log stamped to receive a book bag! To encourage children to read throughout the summer, we will have a weekly drawing at each branch for special prizes, from restaurants, bowling, movies, etc. Every week of summer will be assigned a

special drawing prize. Children may enter once a week if a new book has been read. Prizes will be available ONLY the week to which it is has been assigned. A full list of prizes can be found at your library. To enter, take your reading log to your Library to show that you have read a book. We will stamp your log and enter your name into that week's drawing. Entry for weekly drawings stops when a child turns in the reading log for final prizes. From August 16 to August 31, children turning in their

completed book logs will receive a certificate.

Thursdays, June 1, 8, 22, 29, 11:00 AM Book Buds Book Buds is designed to foster the love of reading in children in Grades 1-4 and to help them retain their reading skills over summer vacation. Local teens have volunteered to be reading buddies with elementary children in an effort to meet these goals-- and to have fun! Each child is paired with a teen who will listen to the younger student read one-on-one with him/her. Please see someone at the Teen or Children's desk to sign up your child.

Tuesday? Saturday, May 30-June 3, 10:00 AM? 4:00 PM Build a Paper House Make and Take It's the first week of summer! Get started building a better world by creating your own 3-dimensional paper house! A template will be provided to decorate, cut, fold and tape together. Ages 6-11. No registration required. While supplies last.

Tuesday, May 30, 2:30 PM Water Bottle Fish Story and Craft How can we recycle those water bottles? How about turning them into a fish! Come listen to the story Rain Fish by Lois Ehlert and decorate a water bottle shaped fish with tissue paper. Ages 6-9.

Wednesday, May 31, 10:30 AM The Three Little Pigs Houses Story and Craft Build a house of straw, sticks and bricks for the three little pigs after listening to a version of The Three Little Pigs illustrated by Emily Bolam. Children will be given a variety of paper scraps and shapes to build these houses. Ages 2-5.

Saturday, June 3, 10:00 AM Jack and Kitty Jack and Kitty are one of the most in-demand musical duos in the Minnesota area. Specializing in quality acoustic music, this Emmy Award winning duo love to perform concerts nationwide. The Minneapolis Star Tribune hailed them as "one of the most entertaining groups in the Midwest." Ages 2 ? 11. About 45 minutes

Monday, June 5, 1:00 PM Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre's Youth Ballet Ballet Soir?e is a celebration of the beauty of dance with excerpts from the classical ballets of old to the neo-classical works of today. You will see Puss and Boots and Little Red Riding Hood from Sleeping Beauty, the graceful swans from Swan Lake, the lively ballroom dance from Cinderella, and the bouncy fun of the new work, Beach Club. Ages 5 and up. About 40 minutes.

Monday, June 5, 5:00 PM Daisy the Reading Pig -- Pig Out on Reading Farmer Minor tells stories about Daisy's formative years (all true) with Farmer & Mrs. Minor and shares many of her favorite pig books. Daisy probably has the world's largest collection of `pig' books. Daisy is the "most famous pig in the whole world!" All ages. About 45 minutes.

Tuesday, June 6, 2:30 PM Famous Structures with Paper Shapes Story and Craft What does the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal have in common? They are famous structures that can be built with shapes. Build these and other famous structures out of basic shapes after listening to the story, Iggy Peck, A rchitect by Andrea Beaty and viewing pictures of various famous structures from our non-fiction collection. Ages 6-9.

Thursday, June 8, 2:00 PM Baton Rouge Astronomical Society Visitors from the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society return with a variety of physical science experiments of interest for children and their families. Children will be introduced to a special science exercise they can perform at home with adults. They can report their findings online, just like a real scientist. Ages 8 ? 11. About 45 minutes

Monday, June 12, 1:00 PM Cangelosi Dance Project Cangelosi Dance Project present their annual summer dance performance with choreography by Kris Cangelosi performed by her company in variety of jazz, modern and ballets styles. Ages 5 - 11.

Tuesday, June 13, 2:30 PM Sparkling Pipe Cleaner Crowns Story and Craft Be a Princess or a Prince for a day. Come make a sparkling crown for yourself or a friend after listening to the story Once Upon Cool Motorcycle Dude by Kevin O'Malley. Ages 6-11. Registration required.

Wednesday, June 14, 10:30 AM Father's Day Tie Story and Craft Father's Day is just around the corner! What is better than a home made gift from their child.! Have your child decorate a special father's day paper tie with tissue paper and crayons after listening to the story Gator Dad by Brain Lies. For children Age 2 only in the children's room.

Wednesday, June 14, 10:30 AM Father's Day Handprint Tie Story and Craft Children can decorate a special tie for their father and personalize it with their handprint after listening to a story about a father and daughter called Hammer and Nails by John Bledsoe. Ages 3-6 only in the meeting r oom.

Wednesday, June 14, 2:30 PM Baton Rouge Mounted Police Patrol The Baton Rouge Police Force is ready to trot out the Mounted Patrol Unit to provide us with a demonstration of their day to day activities. Families are welcome to come meet the officers and their equestrian partners. Ages 6 and up.

Thursday, June 15, 10:30 AM Atchafalaya Dancers The Atchafalaya Native Dancers will present a program on Native American dances and traditions at various library branches this summer. Dances range from men's and women's traditional dances, grass dance, fancy shawl, and more. Ken has worked at a variety of Indian Powwows in Marksville, Louisiana and in other states. Ages 4 and up. About 45 minutes.

Monday, June 19, 10:00 AM Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show Join Harvey Rabbit, Cecil the Orangutan, Miss Laura and Mr. Tim as they bring fun and mayhem to the library with ventriloquism, puppetry, music, magic, and comedy and audience participation! It just wouldn't be summer without a visit from this gang! Ages 2 and up. About 45 minutes.

Wednesday, June 21, 10:30 AM Basic Shapes Dump Truck Story and Craft Let's get building with The Mixed-Up Truck!! We will read this story by Stephen Savage then build our own dump trucks with a variety of paper shapes and fill it with a load of crepe paper. Ages 2-5.

Monday, June 26, 11:00 AM Water Bottle Balloon Racers Story and Craft It's time to recycle, reuse and race with those water bottles!!! After listening to the poems from the non-fiction book Poem-mobiles: crazy car poems by Patrick Lewis, we will create balloon -powered water bottle cars and then see how fast they go!!! Ages 9-11.

Tuesday, June 27, 11:00 AM Cardboard Airplanes Story and Craft Build a better airplane!! That `s what Rosie Revere did in the story Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty. We will listen to this story about a girl who didn't give up on her dreams then we'll build and paint our own cardboard tube dream airplane with a moving propeller! Ages 8-11.

Wednesday, June 28, 10:00 AM Chuck Galey Presents Insights into the World of Illustration Join children's book author/illustrator Chuck Galey as he guides young readers through the magical process of creating picture books for children. Come prepared to create exciting drawings of characters from your own imagination! Ages 6 ? 11.

May/ June Story Time Dates

Wednesdays, May 31; June 7, 14, 21, 10:00 AM Toddlertime - For children from walking through 2 years old accompanied by an adult. Sessions are very informal and include short books, simple rhymes, songs, and fingerplays. Sessions last about 15-20 minutes. Wednesdays, May 31; June 7, 14, 21, 10 :00 AM Preschool ? For children ages 3 ? 5 years old. Children can attend without an adult, although adults must stay in the library. Sessions last about 30 minutes. Storytimes are meant to be fun and non-stressful for children. Because children's chronological ages do not always coincide with their emotional ages, children may elect to be in a younger or older class. Simply talk with one of our library staff.
