This is an exciting and excellent career opportunity to join the Senior Management Team at Suffolk New College. This role will require you to lead on all strategic aspects of the Engineering, Construction and Building Technology curriculum. Supported by the three Curriculum Heads and a Gas Centre Manager, you will have oversight and accountability for the curriculum development, performance and operational delivery.

This is an exciting period of growth and development for the Directorate, with bold plans to grow and develop the existing provision to include ‘green’ technologies in Construction, Technology and Motor Vehicle Engineering through a new Sustainability Centre. The successful applicant will play a key role leading on curriculum planning, including the long-term design of an innovative class based and work based learning curriculum, as well as a requirement to work on the development of new facilities and the reconfiguration of existing facilities.

Reporting to the Deputy Principal, you will pro-actively lead and manage the Directorate to deliver an exceptional student experience.

You will therefore need to be able to demonstrate:

• Strategic vision with the ability to translate to operational outputs and impact;

• Inspirational and motivational leadership qualities;

• Expertise in the curriculum areas of the role with experience of working with young people aged 16+;

• Ability to build and develop sustainable relationships with employers and external agencies;

• Creative, innovative and solution focused approaches, which deliver an exceptional student experience and student outcomes.

You should also hold a relevant degree or professional qualification, maths and English at Level 2 or equivalent alongside a teaching qualification at Level 5. Ideally you will also hold a professional management qualification.

This post is predominantly based at Suffolk New College Ipswich Campus. However, Suffolk New College is a multi-campus site and the Directorate has provision across all College sites, therefore you will be required to work at and travel between campuses. A relocation support package will be available for the right candidate, if re-locating from outside the area.

DIRECTORATE OF ENGINEERING, CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING TECHNOLOGY

Our Directorate of Engineering, Construction and Building Technology has provision at the Ipswich Campus, at Suffolk Rural and On the Coast at Halesworth, which is located 25 miles north east of Suffolk’s County Town. Suffolk New College is a medium-sized FE provider spread across four campuses in Suffolk – Ipswich, Suffolk Rural (a specialist Land-Based campus in Otley), Leiston and Halesworth, with the last two campuses denoting the College’s On the Coast provision.

The Directorate of Engineering, Construction and Building Technology delivers a wide range of qualifications within Engineering, Electrical, Construction Trades, Plumbing, Vehicle Maintenance, Accident Repair and Fabrication & Welding.  The curriculum offer currently includes Level 1, 2 and 3 class based qualifications designed to develop both theory and practical skills, offered on both a full-time and part-time basis, in order to meet the needs of a diverse range of students, alongside responding to employer needs. In addition, the Directorate is also an Early Adopter of T Levels where a first cohort of learners is currently half-way-through a T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction, which the successful applicant would also be required to lead upon.

We offer great opportunities for students to undertake practical activities and use specialist facilities and equipment as part of the curriculum. This is an exciting period of growth and development for the Directorate, with a cutting-edge new Sustainability Centre planned for late 2021. The successful applicant will play a key role leading on curriculum planning, including the long-term design of an innovative class based curriculum, as well as supporting the quality of the work based learning provision with the Director of Apprenticeships and Business Development. Provision also includes commercial Gas courses, higher level Apprenticeship programmes, an HNC/HND in Construction and the Built Environment and a Degree (Apprenticeship) in Civil Engineering. Additionally, a yearly review of the entire curriculum is required, liaising with local, regional and national partners to grow this area of provision to fully utilise the excellent facilities.

A cross-college approach to supporting learners to achieve on all elements of their study programme is essential. This post will play a key role in promoting good working relationships with cross-college colleagues. English and maths form an essential part of the learner’s study programme and the specialist team work closely with vocational tutors to deliver an excellent learner experience to ensure success and achievement for all. Close working with the Head of Business Development is also required to plan and deliver meaningful work experience for all learners. Additionally, the successful applicant would be expected to support delivery of the cross-College Professional Development curriculum to all learners, working with the Director of Quality and Teaching Development to measure its impact.

The Directorate team comprises of management (three Heads and a Gas Centre Manager reporting into the Director), teaching staff, technicians and administrators who are all committed to delivering an exceptional experience to our learners to enable them achieve and to progress their chosen career through Further Education, Higher Education opportunities or employment.

Salary: Within the range £51,513 to £61,818 per annum

JOB PURPOSE

1. Provide leadership to the Directorate and the staff and students within it.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Leadership & Management

1. To be an effective member of the College’s Senior Management Team driving forward the College Strategic Plan.

2. To lead a team of Area Heads and Curriculum Co-ordinators to manage the Directorate in an open and supportive manner.

3. To ensure staff adhere to College policies and procedures and use College systems for tracking student progress and achievement including EBS, ProAchieve and Markbook.

4. To performance manage staff within the Directorate and to take responsibility for the implementation of Human Resource policies, including appraisal and staff development, and to tackle poor performance and to celebrate success.

5. To support the Area Heads to ensure the College’s student discipline policies are followed and to act in complex cases, where needed, involving the College’s Student Admissions and Behaviour Panel and parents/carers.

6. Promote a positive and safe environment within the Directorate, which is student centred.

7. To implement all Health and Safety policies, including Risk Assessments and Visits and Trips Forms, and to be proactive in maintaining safety to students and staff.

8. To develop effective channels of communication with all staff, students and parents, where appropriate, in the Directorate.

9. Pro-actively engage in Senior Management Team meetings and other internal and external meetings and groups prioritising College interests and representing the Directorate or College as appropriate.

Quality

1. To assure and to enhance the quality of learning programmes within the Directorate including taking full managerial responsibility for delivery of consistent high quality teaching and learning. To set standards and expectations for outstanding teaching, learning and assessment within the Directorate including the use of e-learning.

2. To promote continuous improvement in the quality of the student and apprentice experience and student and apprentice outcomes, through rigorous self-assessment processes.

3. To contribute to enhancing quality across the College, working with other Directors supporting cross-College quality improvement initiatives.

4. To achieve College Key Performance Indicators for the Directorate including achievement rates for students and apprentices, high grades, retention, destination and value-added, as well as setting and achieving recruitment targets.

5. To fully implement the Tutorial Policy and the effective use of ProMonitor, Protarget and Markbook within the Directorate, along with clear systems which track student and apprentice progress against target grade.

6. To support Area Heads in targeting CPD that develops innovation in teaching, learning and assessment, working towards enhancing independent and technology enhanced learning activities across the Directorate.

Curriculum Planning & Development

1. To be responsible for developing and shaping an innovative curriculum offer across all lines of funding and income generation, which responds to employer needs and local priorities.

2. To pro-actively engage in College recruitment and marketing activities to meet College growth targets.

3. To build up effective external links with Higher Education, specifically the University of Suffolk and their programmes, local employers, voluntary services, and schools. To network with Ambassadors of the College and Corporation members to develop student and apprentice opportunities.

4 To lead the activities associated with the College who is an early adopter of the T Level in Construction: design, planning and surveying 2020.

5 Take an active role in College initiatives and projects associated with the curriculum including the Institute of Technology currently.

Budget & Resources Management

1. To be responsible for the effective and efficient recruitment and deployment of human resources, identifying gaps and surplus to the Deputy Principal as necessary.

2. To be responsible for creating timetables for learning that give a coherent learning programme for students and use physical resources effectively.

3. To be responsible for the day-to-day management of a delegated budget. To work within and prioritise budget allocation.

4. To ensure physical resources are of commercial/industry standard, and develop capital bids with Deputy Principal where needed to support new curriculum.

1. To undertake cross-College responsibilities and role as agreed with the Deputy Principal.

2. To undertake any other responsibilities determined from time to time by other Senior Post Holders.
