Course Description

Explores a variety of drawing and painting techniques and media; emphasizes developing basic drawing and painting skills and critical analysis skills for responding to master drawings and paintings. Examines solutions to drawing problems through student drawings and those of other artists. Covers Western and non-Western cultures.

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

Notes:

*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.

~Elementary schools will utilize P (pass) and F (fail) in Health/Physical Education, Music, World Languages, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.

Late Work Policy

Students will have 3 opportunities to submit late project and homework assignments.

Students who fail to submit their project and homework assignment(s) on the date delineated by the individual instructor will receive a point deduction as follows:

*Late Day 1 11 points 89 is the total possible points a student may earn

*Late Day 2 20 points 80 is the total possible points a student may earn

*Late Day 3 25 points 75 is the total possible points a student may earn

The late assignment policy does not apply to assignments with more than three days completion deadline.

NOTE: The 3rd Day is the last opportunity students may have to submit a late homework assignment. The grade of a zero will remain.

*Teacher will determine the date the student must submit the assignment.

Make-up Policy: You have 1 day from the first day you return to class to turn in a missed assignment.

Tutorial is required when students are absent from class upon return to school in order to receive missed instruction and to catch up on missed lab time. Class time may not be used to catch up on missed work. No time may be added to the schedule and all assignments must be completed. Research projects may not be made up.

|DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|STUDENT PROGRESS |Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each |

| |semester.  The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate |

| |deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of|

| |the students. See Board Policy IH. |

|ACADEMIC INTEGRITY |Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing |

| |false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or |

| |password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development |

| |Handbook. |

|ACADEMIC DISHONESTY |Cheating on a test, quiz, or assignment is considered to be a serious breach of conduct. The student will be |

| |penalized with a ~ZERO~ for the assignment, an administrative referral and parents will be notified. Actions |

| |considered to constitute cheating are: using unauthorized materials in a test situation, receiving or knowingly |

| |giving information regarding a test before and during the test, turning in work for credit which is not one’s |

| |own, and plagiarism. Plagiarism will be strictly assessed on all assignments in this course |

|HOMEWORK |Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience. |

| |Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience.  It should be considered the |

| |possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB.|

|MAKE-UP WORK |When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently |

|DUE TO ABSENCES |beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days |

| |absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA. |

|SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS |All students are required to exhibit the highest caliber of behavior and diligence in their work. Respect given |

| |to teacher, peers, and self is paramount. Talking and non art-related discussions shall be kept to a minimum. |

| |Horseplay, off-task behavior, sleeping, and tardiness are not tolerated. Electronic devices for personal |

| |communication, music and/or entertainment are not allowed to be used in the classroom at any time. Daily reading|

| |and writing is required. |
