Syllabus

Course Pre-requisites:

Studio Art

Course Content:

Drawing and Painting is a one year course that will focus on only drawing and painting issues. Students will continue to use the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design to create original compositions.

Particular emphasis will be placed on students doing all original art. They will not be able to work from any other artists’ artwork, including published photographs, except as reference.

Students will be encouraged to take photos of everything. They will need to develop their own library of photographs to work from.

Artists Birthday

The “Artist’s Birthday” is a group project. You will be paired with another student in the class randomly and together you will throw a birthday party for your artist. This will be due on the month of the artists’ birthday!

Semester I

Students will be focused on further growth in mastering techniques. This will be accomplished through a series of teacher initiated projects. The focus will be on mastery of concept and composition through a variety of drawing issues. We will use many different drawing media during this semester.

In addition students will be thinking about their ideas for the concentration section with a final choice by the end of the quarter. They will have to turn in a written statement expressing their ideas.

Altered Book - Journal/Sketchbook will be a large focus this quarter and throughout. Students will use their Journals to explore different ideas and techniques. Altered book will be due every other week.

Art History Source Book is an outlet for students to explore their own personal aesthetic in art. Students will be required to look at art weekly and include images in a source book. This will be a reference for them and will ensure that they are continually expanding their own knowledge and exposure to art in many forms. This can be accomplished by visiting galleries, museums, student art shows or online art shows. Source book will be due every other week (opposite from altered book.)
