The Fall Festival of Halloween

October 2018

The Fall Festival of Halloween

October is a great month for many people. It is the beginning of the fall season with its many festivities and traditions. We begin to don sweaters or light jackets to fend off the crisp chill in the air. We take in the beauty of colors as the leaves change, and we hear the crunching of fallen leaves under our feet.

The Feast of St. Francis comes early in October which means that it is time to bring our beloved pets to church for a blessing. Some enjoy sitting around campfires and others making hearty soups this time of the year. Many of our young folks are filled with the anticipation of celebrating Halloween!

Have you ever wondered about the origins of Halloween? Most of us probably don't think of it as a Christian holiday. But, it might surprise you to learn that Halloween is, indeed, a Christian feast! Perhaps less so now, but historically, Halloween was part of a liturgical season focused around death. It was called Allhallowtide.

Since the earliest days, the Church has celebrated All Saints' Day on November 1st. It was sometimes called, Hallowmas or All Hallows. "Hallow" meaning holy or saint, and "mas" short for Mass. It was a way of recognizing the early martyrs and saints of the early Church. i

As with other feasts and holy days, such as Christmas and Easter, All Hallows (Saints') Day is celebrated with a vigil the evening before. That vigil became All Hallows' Eve. This comes from the Jewish practice of beginning days at sunset, not midnight, a practice that carried over into early Christianity. All Hallow's Eve was often a day of fasting and praying in preparation for All Hallows Day.ii In some cultures, such as the Celtic culture, All Hallow's Eve has been thought to be a "thin place" or "sacred time" where we can sense the closeness of God.

By the Middle Ages, praying for the dead was an important part of Christian piety. Eventually, November 2nd became a day of remembering the dead, All Souls Day. So, when we celebrate All Saints Day, we recognize the Communion of Saints ? those who have gone before us ? asking how we should live as saints now and how we intend to pass on the faith to the next generation. On All Souls Day, we remember and pray for all the faithful departed, especially those closest to us like our relatives and friends. At one time, All Hallows Eve, All Hallows, and All Souls was celebrated as its own triduum called Allhallowtide.iii

St. Matthew's will hold a prayer service to celebrate All Saints/ Souls on Thursday, November 1 at 7:00 pm

While dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating and celebrating Halloween is fun and an important family time, I wonder if it is also an opportunity for families and friends to perhaps recover or revive an "All Hallow's Eve" intention. How might you mark the beginning of Allhallowtide, this three-day period of celebration and remembrance?

Lemler Presentation ? St. Matthew's Vestry Visioning

Presentation from Engagement & Outreach Team

? The team would like to survey the parish for its preference of internal & external activities. This survey would not be a vote for what they want to see scheduled, but rather a guide for the Engagement and Outreach Team to plan strategies and events to implement some of those suggestions. The survey would be distributed in worship, as well as a link provided in the weekly e-mail to an online version of the survey.

? The Team presented a request to set up a fund for the continuing purchase of school supplies and uniforms for Pleasant Run Elementary School since there were funds left over from the successful summer project. A form was presented to the Vestry that the school would fill out to request supplies and uniforms for families in need. It would then be forwarded to St. Matt's for action if funds are available. There was some discussion regarding the privacy of the information supplied on the form which will require follow-up. A motion to establish the fund was approved unanimously ? moved, Greg Staab; seconded, Jeff Weir.

Vestry Action

? The minutes of the July Vestry meetings were approved and will stand as presented.

? July & August financials were reviewed. They were

approved unanimously ? moved, Greg Staab; sec-

onded ? Steve Albrecht. Projected figures for 2019

would be presented at the October meeting. The ap-

portionment figure should remain the same for 2019.

The actual amount of Diocesan aid is yet to be determined.

People's Warden Report ? Jeff Weir

? Jeff's report included the status of the rectory with the Gashumi family moving out shortly. The kitchen commercial refrigerator is in the process of being repaired.

Old Business

? The meeting with KHEPRW is to be rescheduled. (the KHEPRW meeting will be after services on 10/21)

New Business

? Lighting Proposals: two lighting proposals for the sanctuary (fixtures only) have been received. An estimate for installation costs should be available soon.

? Greg Staab is working with the Bishop to implement the change of status for Fr. Frank from Priest-in-Charge to Rector.

Fr. Frank's Comments

? Fr. Frank indicated that at the recent Executive Council meeting the future structure of Deaneries would be modified. Since there was currently no Dean of the Mid-Central Deanery, the Bishop asked Fr. Frank to serve in that capacity and organize a meeting of the Deanery prior to the annual Diocesan Convention.

? A scholarship for two members of Crew 161 (for those who have aged out of Boy Scouts) has been granted. Potential projects would be presented to the Vestry for review.

? Fr. Frank discussed potential institutional partnerships between St. Matt's, KHEPRW and Pleasant Run Elementary School

? The calendar of major upcoming events was noted

? An 8 a.m. Sunday service (utilizing Rite II) would begin the First Sunday of Advent. Adult Forum would continue at 9 a.m. with choral Eucharist at 10 am. The Schedule might need to be adjusted after some evaluation period.

The 39th Annual CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Sunday, October 21. Please see Jenny Lloyd-Jones for details if you are interested in either walking or participating in support of walkers.

What is the CROP Hunger Walk? It raises funds to fight hunger around the world and around the corner. It is sponsored by Church World Service (CWS). One fourth of the funds raised are shared with local hunger fighting agencies and the remaining funds are channeled through partners worldwide. In addition, food collected the day of the walk go to local food pantries.
