Dear Chairman Calvert, Ranking Member McCollum, Chairwoman Murkowski and Ranking Member Udall:

We, the undersigned 1,050 organizations and businesses, write today in support of ENERGY STAR and respectfully urge you to oppose any efforts to reduce the effectiveness of this highly successful public-private partnership.

This voluntary program ? which includes ENERGY STAR labeled products, ENERGY STAR Buildings and Plants, ENERGY STAR homes and home improvements, and ENERGY STAR for Small Business ? is a cost-effective, market-based tool helping businesses, consumers, homeowners, state and local governments, schools, and other organizations save money by investing in energy efficiency. This contributes to economic growth, reduces harmful emissions, increases our energy security, and improves the reliability of our electric system by reducing peak demand. For many homeowners, consumers, and businesses, ENERGY STAR has provided the catalyst to invest in energy efficiency.

ENERGY STAR successfully overcomes market barriers to energy efficiency by awarding a simple, clear symbol that gives consumers confidence that they are buying a highly efficient product. Today, the program enjoys remarkable brand awareness of nearly 90 percent and has helped lower energy bills throughout the U.S. economy.

ENERGY STAR's success as a federally run program is demonstrated by its extensive market penetration. The program includes over 1,800 manufacturing partners across 70 different product categories. More than 300 million qualified products were sold in the U.S. in 2015, generating savings of more than $34 billion in 2015 alone. For every dollar Americans invested in energy efficiency through ENERGY STAR, they reduced their energy bills by an average of $4.50. Cumulatively, since 1992, ENERGY STAR has helped families and businesses save $430 billion on utility bills, while avoiding 2.7 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to the economic and environmental benefits, ENERGY STAR is an important driver of innovation in the manufacturing and building sectors. ENERGY STAR provides an effective means of product and service differentiation, which incentivizes manufacturers and builders to develop better-performing products and buildings while improving U.S. energy productivity and competitiveness. Making the success of ENERGY STAR all the more impressive is the fact that it is a voluntary program, setting the global standard for public-private partnerships.

ENERGY STAR is a model for successful collaboration between the public and private sectors. It enjoys a long track record of success and should be strengthened, not weakened, to ensure it continues providing these important benefits to the public while helping us meet our energy and environmental goals. We respectfully urge you to stand with us in support of ENERGY STAR.

Thank you for your consideration.
