From Pastor Bob:

Today's New Testament reading from 1st Timothy is one of the three "Pastoral Letters" attributed to the Apostle Paul. The other letters are 2nd Timothy and Titus. They are short letters and if you have never read them, I urge you to make some time to do so.

These letters were written to churches which were already established but needed some guidance when it came to developing patterns of ministry and structure as the message of the Gospel continued to spread. Timothy and Titus were given the responsibility to present the information about the role and function of bishops and presbyters and deacons to the churches. Where do you begin?

From the very outset Paul wanted to make the point as strongly as possible that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Do you know any sinners? What does a sinner look like? Why is sinner in need of Christ's saving? And if I am one of these sinners how can I even imagine that Christ would work through me to share the Good News?

Paul makes his point this way: "I'm so grateful to Christ Jesus for making me adequate to do this work. He went out on a limb, you know, in trusting me with this ministry, even though I was a foul-mouthed man unafraid of God nor any person (Blasphemer). Even though it was me who early on was given authority to root out anyone who was a follower of Jesus (Persecutor) and a man of violence."

Even though I was the foremost of all sinners, "I received mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with faith and love that are in Christ Jesus."

People still struggle with grasping the fact that through Jesus Christ a person can be transformed and used to share the Good News. What is this Good News? Paul writes, "The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners ? just like me! Look at me ? I'm proof it can happen!"

Your place in Kingdom work is just as important today. If you think Jesus can't save you and make you a witness, look at Paul, who wrote, "And now Jesus shows me off ? evidence of his endless patience ? to those who are right on the edge of trust Christ forever." Point made!

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
