ADDRESSING THE IMMINENT DANGER TO FREIGHT HAULERS

Reports of violence are commonplace across the United States. Violent protests threaten the disruption of American lives and commerce. Specifically, individuals who transport goods across the country have been threatened and/or met with violence.

Because of the increased risks, truckers must be afforded every opportunity to travel safely and deliver their load(s) to the intended destination. Often, the safest route is not the quickest (or direct) one. Unfortunately, due to the restrictive hours of service (HOS) requirement (included as part of the ELD – Electronic Logging Device Mandate), drivers are not afforded the ability to re-route their trip because the trip clock may not allow sufficient time for extended travel.

This inability to choose the safest route places drivers in imminent danger of assault, injury and or death, potential loss of freight, and damage to their vehicles.

It is more than ironic that, at least in some instances, no charges have been brought against the offenders. At least one incident occurred within our state borders. Action must be taken to ensure the safety of Missourians and those who travel our roadways.

Truckers must be free to exercise their best judgment when called upon to serve Missourians and Americans by delivering goods across our land. One specific action you are called to take is to exempt truck drivers from the HOS requirement (at least until a sense of normalcy is reached). Please contact U.S. Secretary, Elaine Chao to request an immediate HOS exemption.

This simple act to exempt freight haulers from the HOS requirement must be done post haste. The undersigned are calling upon you to exercise your authority to ensure the safe passage of much needed freight from origin to final destinations without the undue burden of watching the clock.

Please help truckers across Missouri and our nation – call on the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) to exempt freight haulers from the HOS requirement.
