Genetic Research Brochure

Rather than write a traditional research paper, we are asking that you create and informational brochure about your assigned genetic disorder. Your audience for this brochure is either someone who has just been diagnosed as having this genetic disorder or someone who is the parent or child of someone who has been diagnosed. Your teacher will show you examples of good brochures so you can be familiar with the qualities you should include in your brochure.

Attached is a basic outline as to what your brochure should look like. This is a front and back example for a brochure. Remember that you are creating this brochure to be read by individuals who know NOTHING about this disorder and just found out they have it or someone they love has it. So, try to think about the information you would want to have in a brochure if you were to find out you indeed had this disorder. Try not to be too wordy or lengthy because that is not an eye catching brochure.

What to include is listed in the sample brochure attached. In order to describe the detail needed in this brochure you will need to summarize your knowledge of cells, cell division, genetics, DNA and proteins that you have learned in class. You will take the assigned genetic disorder and explain in depth what caused it? What is happening at a cellular level? Is there a cure? Lifestyle changes needed? How is someone diagnosed? Etc.

Remember Genetic disorders are caused by changes to DNA. These changes are either really small or involve one tiny piece of DNA or are really large and result in an entire missing chromosome. Either way, the affect on how someone lives their life can be dramatic. You need to determine if your genetic disorder affects the DNA itself or the chromosome.

ASSIGNED GENETIC DISORDER IS ________________________________________________

Presentation: Should be 3-5 minutes and include 3-6 power point slides. Try not to READ off the slides or off of your brochure. Remember, you are the expert on your topic. Therefore, you should be able to answer questions on the spot without having to read your brochure to find the answer (you should know what you wrote so don’t just copy and paste). Make sure the delivery is smooth and interesting as well as being well rehearsed.

Power point should include a picture, basic facts and relevant information for your presentation.
