Course Description
Honors Algebra 1 is a rigorous, fast-paced course intended for the highly motivated and talented mathematics student. The course is organized to: strengthen/solidify algebraic skills; develop complex problem solving skills; provide opportunity for the exploration of numbers and development of number sense; facilitate a smooth transition into Honors Geometry. Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with the measurement, properties, and relationships of points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids. It is useful, challenging, logical, and gives visual meaning to arithmetic and algebra. Principles of mathematic proof will form a foundation of our work. Logical, spatial, and algebraic reasoning skills and insight will be developed through our in-depth study of axiomatic and analytic geometry. Students will enhance their ability to think rationally, analytically, and critically.

Textbooks: Algebra 1 An Integrated Approach, by Benson, Hamberg, & Milauskas: McDougal Littell
Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge, by Rhoad, Milauskas, & Whipple: McDougal Littell
Materials: Scientific calculator (a graphing calculator will be helpful throughout your mathematical career), dedicated three-ring binder, colored pencils, protractor and compass.
Homework Policy
Homework will be assigned during every class period and checked/graded the subsequent class period ONLY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PERIOD. The problems, including any relevant diagrams, must be written on your paper and have all work shown with answers to receive credit. If you are unable to complete a problem, you must show evidence of effort. Periodically there will be homework quizzes. The problem(s) will then be graded for correctness. Questions regarding homework problems will be answered daily. Late assignments will not be accepted for credit, although it is in your best interest to complete all assignments. Make-up homework is only graded at the beginning of the class period!!! If homework is not submitted at the time requested it will be considered late. There will be no make-up assignments collected during the week of finals.
Absence and Make-Up Policy
• Students are allowed two class periods for each excused absence to make-up work that was assigned on the day of an excused absence. The return day is considered the first class period. Students are required to submit any work that was previously assigned and due on the day of their excused absence on the day of their return.
• Students who have an excused absence on the day of a quiz or test will be required to make up that quiz or test in the testing center on the next school day. For extended absences 3 days or more please see me first. Test taking circumstances and questions may be different. Make-up exams are usually not scored with exams taken in class. The testing center is room A205 and is open from 5:45 to 7:15, Monday through Friday. Any assessment missed due to an excused absence should be made up the following morning.
• Make-up work, quizzes, or tests will not be accepted for unexcused absences.
Transfer Policy
• Students may transfer to a different math course during the first three weeks (15 class periods) with teacher approval. They will be graded only on subsequent work in their new course, but be responsible for all of the content of the course in terms of future tests/quizzes and the final exam.
• Students may transfer to a different math course between the third and sixth weeks (15 to 30 class periods) with teacher and department head approval. The grades from their previous course will count as 30% of their trimester grade. The grades from their new course will count as 50% of their trimester grade. The final exam will count as 20% of their trimester grade. Again, students will be responsible for all of the content of the course in terms of future tests/quizzes and the final exam.
• There will be no student transfers after six weeks (30 class periods). Students may Drop/Fail from the course after six weeks.
Assessment Policy
Tests will always be announced at least two days in advance; quizzes may or may not be. To some extent all assessments will be cumulative. Your grade for this course will be determined largely by your ability to demonstrate your mastery of the material on tests and quizzes. Extra credit may not be given, so please do not ask. ****Exams are given weekly in Honors Algebra 1.
