Overall Objectives: To explore historical, social and cultural factors and societal responses that support agriculture and natural resources for sustainable agriculture and natural resources development. Specifically, the summer program will:

1. Develop awareness to the U.S. social, cultural, political, economic, and family systems.

2. Provide exposure to the U.S. food, agriculture and environmental programs and issues.

3. Expose students to various approaches to social, economic, environmental or educational interventions and their transferability to other countries.

4. Provide exposure to the U.S. land grant university system and understanding of the requirements and expectations of undergraduate and graduate studies in the United States.

5. Create an opportunity to discuss and reflect on personal values and aspirations.

Thursday, August 26: Arrival in Michigan, USA

Receive participants at Lansing/Detroit Metro Airport [Dr. Suvedi]

Friday, August 27: Overview of the Program (Dr. Cousins and Dr. Suvedi)

8:15 a.m.: Meet at Natural Resources Conference Room

- Welcome Remarks

- Take a ferry boat to Mackinaw Island

- Bicycle tour of the Island

- Lunch at the Island

- Visit Fort Mackinac

1:00 p.m. - Leave for Corunna

1:30 p.m. - Tour the Corunna Agriscience program and Corrin's Strawberry, Sweet Corn and Pumpkin Patch

2:30 p.m. – Tour of Braid’s Dairy Farm

3:15 p.m. - Arrive at the Shiawassee County Fair for a walking tour of the grounds and exhibits. Meet with fair representatives in the community building.

5:30 p.m. - Dinner at the Shiawassee Fair Community Building with fair representatives. Attend ‘Parade of Champions’.

8:00 p.m. - Depart for MSU

Friday, Sept. 3: Field Trip to Western Michigan [[Suvedi and Cousins]

Depart MSU at 7:30:00 a.m.

- Visit Clarksville Horticulture Research Station 8:30-10:00a.m.

- 10:30 – noon Visit Gerald Ford Museum, Grand Rapids

- 2:30-5:30 p.m. Visit P.J. Hoffmaster National Park

Saturday, Sept. 4: Depart for Chicago [Dr. Cousins and Dr. Suvedi]

Visit Chicago landmarks: Field Museum, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, Michigan Avenue/downtown area, Sears Tower
