Workshop Notes

1. Welcome given by Falguni

2. Morning prayer by sister

3. Warm up activity by Rachael

4. Rule setting - mobile on silent, keep to time (falguni), not interrupting

5. Expectation setting activity done by Peter, clarification of togay's programme

6. Defining global education brainstorm by participants. Discussing VSO's definition of GE, by Peter.

7. 'How you can do global education' activity in groups, using photo prompts. 2 groups came up with the following ideas:

Global activities you can do at your placement, in your community, whilst volunteering/working:

• Sesitisation

← chief barasas

← funerals

← through local radio stations

← churh for a

← Sports ActivitiesTree Planting/Environmental Awareness

← Music and drama festivals

← Linkaging/exchange programmes, international cooperation

Global Education activities you can do when you return home, as a RV:

• become more politically aware at home

• wear t-shirts – be awalking advertisement

• bringing understanding between nations through art and music

• Internet – blogs, setting upa discussion group, facebook

• Liaise with religious groups

• Sensitise others to issues about the environment at individual at group level.

• advocacythrough local media

• School visits and presentaations – interactive projects

• Group talks/presentation

Each group presented their ideas; Peter recapped and emphasised thatGE doesn't have to be a huge project.

8. Sidd gave out a GE handout and discussed its GE's links to VSOC, and Peter mentioned the model of how GE works in VSO, with VSO staff, VSO serving and return volunteers, and partners.

8. Kennedy gave a talk on Global Education and Advocacy and recapped on the 3 programme areas VSOJ is working on in Kenya (participation and governance coming to kenya soon). Brief historyof VSOJ. Emphasised the mainstreaming of GE in each of our own programme areas and placements;

it shouldn't be a separate issue.

Importance of using Global Education as a way of profiling VSO as a development player. EG could be on children's rights. Role of challenging stereotypes. Education about awareness. Impact of decisions made in one part of the world on another. Linkaging. Importance of advocation at all 3 levels. Keep it simple and realistic. Encouraging partners.

9. Presentation by John Mumbo, District Environment Officer, Nyando. For provicial director of environment Nyanza. Effects of climate change in western kenya. National Environment management Authority. He startd by giving a overview of Nema's role and responsibilities. He discussed some of the environmental issues in Western. Discussed some definitions of climate change. have a definition too, check out their website. He talked about some of the causes of climate change, both natural and man made causes. He exaplained some issues around climate change and some coping mechnisms. nema.go.ke
