Welcome to World History. In this class we study major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late eighteenth century through the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. We trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations. We extrapolate from the American experience that democratic ideals are often achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced everywhere in the world. Students develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Students consider multiple accounts of events in order to understand international relations from a variety of perspectives.

The following units of study are covered this year:

• The Rise of Democracy

• Enlightenment and Democratic Revolution

• The French Revolution and Napoleon

• Industrialization

• Imperialism

• World War I

• The Russian Revolution and the Rise of Totalitarianism

• World War II

• The Cold War

• Modern Nations and the Middle East

This is a rigorous college preparatory class and you will have readings or other homework assignments at least 4 nights a week. You must do the readings and homework to be successful. Expect quizzes or warm-up activities that deal directly with the prior nights work. Give your best effort in completing homework and readings. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED; however you may make corrections to improve your grade. Use your learning targets to guide your reading and note taking. Reading notes and other assignments will be collected at the end of each Unit in a Portfolio and count towards your grade.

You must score in the Advanced, Proficient, or Basic level on the Unit exams. Scores in the Below Basic and Far Below Basic level are not acceptable and test corrections will be made to ensure comprehension of material.

My Website: I post all assignments and due dates on my website. If you “lost” your copy of the assignment were absent and need the make up work, or just want to have an extra copy. You may print the assignments from my website It is also linked to the PV homepage under the staff directory.

Absences: If you are absent it is your responsibility to get the make up work. You will have as many days as you were absent to turn in the make up work.

Unexcused tardies are not acceptable. If you are not in your seat ready to start class when the bell rings, go straight to the main office or campus supervisors to get your tardy slip. If tardiness continues, further action will be taken such as additional detention time or referral to the office as per the campus wide Tardy Policy.
