Course Description:

This introductory language course focuses on the four key components of communication: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The culture and geography of French speaking countries will also be examined.

Required Texts:

Bien Dit! Level 1 2013– Holt McDougal (ON-LINE TEXTBOOK WILL BE ASSIGNED)

Classroom Policies:

1. Our classroom is a RED ROOM!!!! NO CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES ALLOWED!

2. Be in class when the class starts. Any student not in their seat at the beginning of class will receive a Tardy. Excessive tardiness may cause the student to lose course credit.

3. Be prepared for class. Everyday students must bring their 3-ring binder (chapter packets /vocabulary cards), homework, and pencil/pen.

4. Classroom Passes: You will be allowed 4 passes per semester (20 weeks) without consequences. Once students have used their 4 passes, they will not be allowed to leave the room.

5. There will be no gum chewing or food/drinks allowed in the classroom, unless provided by the teacher. (Water in clear water bottles will be allowed.)

6. Disruptive items (e.g. toys, brushes, makeup, cell phones, ipods, etc) will not be allowed in class and will be confiscated.

7. Purses must remain under the student’s desk at all times or will no longer be allowed in class.

8. As per school policy, cheating on tests or class work will not be tolerated and will result in a zero and disciplinary procedures. Plagiarism of any material will not be tolerated.

9. Upon entering the class, students will turn in all homework, be seated, and start on the 5-minute journal.

10. Misbehavior during the presence of a Substitute Teacher will automatically warrant a disciplinary write up.

11. Students must be dressed appropriately for school. Any student not dressed appropriately will be sent to the office and may receive a zero for the hour.

Materials:

1. 1 three-ring binder

2. 4-5 Section Dividers

3. Writing tool (pencils ((normal color)) or pens ((blue or black only))

4. 1000 index cards for flashcards.

5. Access to the internet (home or school)

6. Personal Kleenex and Hand Sanittizer

7. Additional materials may be required as needed

Homework:

Homework will be given as needed. There are two types of homework. Daily homework is assigned for the next class period. Long-term homework consists of projects, papers and presentations. Long-term assignments are due on the assigned date without excuse. Homework is given to enhance student performance by connecting the old with the new. Homework is due as the student enters the classroom.

• Any homework not turned in at the beginning of class will receive a zero.

• Any assignment not fully completed will receive a zero.

• Messy homework will receive a zero. IF I CAN NOT READ IT; IT IS WRONG!!

• Any homework without a name clearly written on it will be thrown away.

• Work must be completed in regular pencil or using a regular blue or black pen, otherwise it will not be accepted.

NOTE: Any late assignments will only receive a maximum of 50% of the total possible points and must have a LATE WORK FORM ATTACHED.

Note: Homework must be placed in the brown wooden bin and in the appropriate hour to receive credit.

Test/Quiz Make-up:

Test/quiz make-ups will occur on ___________________________ at 2:25pm. This is the only time allotted for this purpose. If the student fails to make-up a test or quiz, a zero will be placed in the grade book and will forfeit any other opportunity to take the test. Any student not in class on time will forfeit this opportunity and will receive a zero. Students have 1 week to take the test/quiz.

Attendance/Participation:

In general, students who attend class consistently earn higher grades. This class will follow the attendance procedure outlined in the student handbook. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the teacher the first day back from being absent. Unexcused tardies or absences will result in the loss of grades for the day.

Please note that participation is an essential component of second language learning therefore class participation is figured into the final grade for each student.

Assistance: Students who would like assistance must schedule an appointment with the teacher at least a day in advance.

Grading Policy: Follow the policy located in the student handbook.

NO EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN.
