JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Pharmaceutical Technician

REPORTING TO: Supervising Pharmacist

SALARY SCALE: Department of Health Consolidated Pay Scales

HOLIDAYS: 24 days per annum.

HEALTH: A candidate for and any person holding the office must be free from any defect or disease which would render him/her unsuitable to hold the office and be in a state of health as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to attend regular and efficient service.

CHARACTER: A candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

HOURS OF WORK: 33.3 permanent hours per week pro rata, 3.7 temporary hours per week. Details of starting and finishing times, which may vary in accordance with Hospice needs, will be notified to you by your Head of Department/Deputy. There may be times when you will be required to work outside of the normal office hours.

WORKING WEEK: Will be determined by the needs of the department between Monday and Friday, an average of 7.4 hours per day, and may be subject to change.

CONFIDENTIALITY: You will have access to various types of records/information in the course of your work. Such records and information are strictly confidential and unless acting on the instruction of an authorised person, on no account must information concerning staff, patients or other Hospital business be divulged or discussed except in the performance of normal duty. In addition, records may never be left in such a manner that unauthorised persons can obtain access to them and must be kept in safe custody when no longer required.

PURPOSE OF THE POST To work within the pharmacy team to ensure the safe, efficient and effective provision of pharmacy services for residents and patients across both the Harold’s cross and the Blackrock sites of Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services.

To work within the pharmacy team to assist in the ongoing development of a quality, patient-centred pharmacy service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

The following duties and responsibilities are to be carried out in accordance with relevant pharmacy standard operating procedures:

• Assemble individualised prescriptions for inpatients and residents

• Assemble discharge prescriptions.

• Assemble outpatient prescriptions.

• Provision of a stock "top-up" system of medication supply to wards.

• Identifying and highlighting possible discrepancies, inaccuracies or duplication in prescriptions to the duty pharmacist prior to dispensing where possible.

• Stock control within the dispensary and on wards.

• Involvement in ordering, procurement and invoicing of pharmacy products.

• Extemporaneous dispensing.

• Assembling stock requisitions for wards and units.

• Pre-packing bulk preparations

• Monitoring and keeping records of air and fridge temperature and humidity measurements.

• Coordinating the ordering, confirmation and dispensing of externally compounded biologic and cytotoxic preparations for individual patients.

• Preparing intravenous biologic medicines as required.

• Receiving, checking and putting away pharmacy orders.

• Maintaining standards of clinical hygiene within pharmacy and monitor adherence to cleaning schedules.

• Operating computer and have a working knowledge of Helix healthcare systems such as Cliniscript and Microsoft office.

• Updating product file details when required to by the senior pharmacy technician or supervising pharmacist.

• Involvement in audit.

• Carry out any other duties assigned from time to time by the pharmacists or senior technician.

• May from time to time be required to work after hours.

Administrative

• Monitoring drug usage and pharmacy activity levels and contributing to the service planning process by assisting in producing dispensing reports and audits.

• Assist in the essential record keeping and filing of prescriptions and pharmacy orders etc in the pharmacy.

• Collect and evaluate data about the pharmacy service as required to by the supervising pharmacist.

• Review and update pharmacy standard operating procedures under the supervision of pharmacist staff.

• Promote a culture that values diversity and respect in the workplace.

• Be mindful of cost effectiveness where relevant.

• Engage in IT developments as they apply to patients and service administration

• Perform such other duties appropriate to the role as may be assigned by the supervising pharmacist.

Education, Training and Self-Development

• Participate in mandatory training programmes.

• Take responsibility for, and keep up to date with pharmaceutical technician practice by participating in continuing professional development such as self-directed learning, reflective practice, in-service training.

• Assist in the induction and training of new pharmacy staff as required by the supervising pharmacist.

• Engage in personal development planning and performance review for self and others as required

• Take part in training / supervision of staff / students as appropriate.

Quality, Safety & Risk

• Follow agreed policies, procedures and safe practices in the workplace,

• Assist in ensuring the safety of self and others, and the maintenance of safe environments and equipment used in pharmacy.

• Assess and manage risk in their assigned area(s) of responsibility including medication error reporting as per pharmacy SOP and organisational policy.

• Support a non-punitive approach to incident reporting relating to medication and patient safety.

• Manage product defect, recall and caution notifications relating to medicines according to pharmacy SOP and as directed to by the supervising pharmacist.

• Take the appropriate timely action to manage any safety incidents or near misses within their assigned area(s).

• Use equipment and appliances in a safe manner.

• Comply with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005.

• Comply with relevant Health and Safety responsibilities as outlined in Hospital Policies and pharmacy SOPs

• Take reasonable care to protect her/his own safety, health and welfare and that of any other person who may be affected by her/his acts or omissions at work

General

• Have a working knowledge of and adhere to Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services’ policies

• at all times

• Perform such other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned from time to time by the management or a nominee and to contribute to the development of the post while in office.

Garda Vetting

Arrangements have been introduced, on a national level, for the provision of Garda Clearance in respect of candidates for employment in areas of the Health Services, where it is envisaged that potential employees would have substantial access to children or vulnerable individuals.
