SUBJECT: Certified Pharmacy Technician - Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

A health care employee who, under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, performs specific job responsibilities authorized by the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Assists Pharmacist in specific job responsibilities:

• Fill Pyxis and floor stock supplies

• Performs clerical and transport functions

• Assists in inpatient medication order entry

• Assists in employee prescription service as directed

• Package and unit dose medications as directed

• Assumes specific inventory responsibilities as directed (after 2 years of experience):

• Performs various drug procurement activities such as preparing and placing orders, checking in supplies, and verifying charges and quantities ordered to manage inventory

• Fill and price requisitions for other services or departments

• Maintain inventory and shelf stock

• Resolution of procurement problems with vendor representatives including pricing and supply problems

• Assists with annual inventory

• Monitors inventory for outdated stock

• Assists in processing computer statistics and charges

• Assists Pharmacist in preparing IV Admixtures and Total Parenteral Nutrition

• Assists Pharmacist in specific job responsibilities:

• Upon double check by Pharmacist, performs dosage calculation and admixture calculations as required

• Under double check by Pharmacist, fills patient medications for 24-hour cassette exchange

• Under Pharmacist supervision, compounds products for patient care

• Assumes specific inventory responsibilities as directed:

• Monitors narcotic wastes and returns as documented through Pyxis

• Maintains narcotic perpetual inventory and monitors scheduled substances inventory

• Assists in Bonner General Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy:

• Processes third party billing such as COBRA and Idaho Medicaid

• Prepares end of month billing for Hospice

• Maintains strict confidentiality regarding knowledge of all patient information (HIPAA), confidential staff and hospital business

• Responsible for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships with all staff members

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs such other duties as may be assigned by Pharmacist in Charge

• Attends in-service programs

• Alert to accident producing hazards and promotion of safety; knowledgeable of fire and evacuation plans/protocols

Report to work as scheduled with minimum absenteeism. Notify Pharmacist a minimum of 2 hours before start of shift in case of absence

• Recognizes the important part this position plays in Performance Improvement of the on-going delivery of care, as outlined in the Bonner General Hospital Mission Statement

• Abides by all Federal, State and Hospital laws, regulations and guidelines

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

• Skills: Ability to read, write legibly and comprehend the written and spoken word in English; basic computer literacy and ability to effectively learn new software programs required; Basic typing (45 WPM)

• Education: High School graduate or equivalent

• Experience: Previous Hospital / Pharmacy experience preferred

• Licensure/Certifications:

← Current State of Idaho Certified Pharmacy Technician license

← Current CPR certification

• Supervisory: None

• Supervised by: Pharmacist on a given shift or Director of Pharmacy

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Job allows employee to vary physical position or activity for comfort

• In a normal work day, may be required to stand and/or walk for 8 hours or longer

• In an average work day, the weight requirements are:

• Mechanical related to equipment common to an acute care environment
