Photo via TwitterFacebook says it has removed 652 pages and accounts from its platform after determining their owners aren't real, but groups based in Russian and Iran. The purpose of the posts on those pages, Facebook said, was to spread misinformation and sow discord ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. The company said the owners of the accounts were engaging in "coordinated inauthentic behavior."The company said the owners of the accounts were carrying out distinct campaigns and so far, it has not established any kind of direct link between the groups. But it was clear they were using the same or similar tactics and were trying to mislead others about who they were and what they were doing.Determined and well-funded"We ban this kind of behavior because we want people to be able to trust the connections they make on Facebook," the company said in a blog post. "And while we're making progress rooting out this abuse, as we've said before, it's an ongoing challenge because the people responsible are determined and well funded."Facebook said it is investing in people and technology and working more closely with law enforcement. It announced those steps earlier this year when it revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a political marketing firm, made unauthorized use of Facebook data to target ads during the 2016 presidential election.Facebook said it received a tip last month from FireEye, a cybersecurity firm, warning that it identified a group called Liberty Front Press as a potential bad actor. Facebook says a subsequent investigation was able to link the account to Iranian state media through publicly available website registration information, as well as the use of related IP addresses and Facebook Pages sharing the same administrators. One part of the network, a Facebook group called Quest 4 Truth, identified itself as an independent Iranian media organization. But Facebook said its investigation showed it was connected to Press TV, an English-language news network affiliated with Iranian state media. Not who they say they areThe overarching theme, says Facebook, is that the account owners portray themselves as independent media organizations when they are not.Earlier this week Microsoft reported that it had taken control of six domains owned by the Russian hacker group APT28, which was using the domains to spoof government and conservative websites.Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says his company has moved from a reactive stance to a proactive one. This article explains how to delete a page in a PDF document using Preview on Mac, Google Chrome, and Smallpdf. The instructions for Microsoft Word are similar to Google Chrome's method. There are multiple methods to remove pages from PDF files, but we're focusing on the most general options regardless of the device you're using, and with minimal hassle. This method requires a PDF editing program. If you use a Mac, you already have one built-in in the form of Preview. Microsoft Word will also work, as well as Google Chrome. Alternatively, you can use a free PDF editor. Open the PDF file in your PDF editor. We're using Google Chrome in our screenshots to delete pages from PDF files but the steps are similar in other apps. Click File > Print. Click Destination and choose Save as PDF. Click Pages. Click Customized. Type in the pages you wish to keep within the PDF document. Click Save. Choose where to save the file then click Save again. The file is now saved minus the pages you wanted to delete. If you regularly use macOS, you already have a PDF editor built-in via Preview. Here's how to remove or delete pages of a PDF document using Preview. Open the PDF file in Preview. Click the preview of the page you wish to delete. If thumbnails aren't displaying, click View > Thumbnails to enable them. Press Delete on your keyboard. Do this for every page you wish to delete. This method only allows you to remove pages from two PDFs per day for free, but it's a good short-term solution. Deleting pages from a PDF document is usually fairly simple but there are some restrictions. These methods won't work on a read-only PDF. If your PDF file has been set to Read-Only, you can't edit it. That means you also can't delete individual pages from it. You'll need to either change the Read-Only settings yourself or ask the creator of the file to change it for you. You still need the password. Are you trying to delete pages from a password protected PDF? You still need to know the password to be able to open the file and delete the relevant pages. Get permission from the owner of the PDF. PDFs tend to be important documents and it's a sensible idea to gain permission from the creator of the PDF before deleting key parts of it. It's not essential in all cases, but it's simply good manners. Thanks for letting us know! Tell us why! Position the cursor at the beginning of the text on a page. Press and hold Ctrl+Shift (or Command+Shift on a Mac) and the down arrow simultaneously to highlight one paragraph at a time. Release the keys and press Backspace. While there's no action that deletes a page from a multi-page Microsoft Word document, you can remove the text on a page with the Delete or Backspace key. When the page is empty of the text and other elements, the next page moves up to take its place. This information applies to all versions of Word. To remove all the material on a page, select the text and position the cursor at the end of the text you want to remove. Then press and hold the Backspace key (or Delete key on a Mac). Depending on how much text you have, consider using a shortcut to highlight the text. Place the cursor at the beginning of the text you want to remove. Press and hold Ctrl+Shift (or Command+Shift on a Mac). At the same time, press the Down Arrow on the keyboard to highlight one paragraph at a time. Continue until all the text you want to remove is highlighted and release all three keys. Alternatively, use the mouse or touchpad to highlight all the text on the page you want to delete. Press the Backspace key (or Delete on a Mac) once to delete all the highlighted text. After the text is removed, the text on the following page moves up to take its place. Using the Delete key on a PC to remove a page is similar to using the Backspace key, except you place the cursor at the beginning of the text you want to remove instead of at the end. If you want to highlight then remove text, follow the instructions above but, instead of pressing the Backspace key, press the Delete key. When you are selecting text for deletion, it is helpful to see the hidden formatting symbols. The Show/Hide function in Word displays hidden paragraph marks, table cells, page breaks, and spaces between words. Use it to see what you need to remove and to avoid removing text you want to keep. Here's how to activate the Show/Hide function before you remove the text on a Word document page. On the ribbon, select Home. In the Paragraph group, select the Show/Hide (paragraph symbol) icon to display the formatting symbols. To turn off this feature, select Show/Hide again. Alternatively, use the key combination Ctrl+Shift+8 (or Command+Shift+8) to toggle the Show/Hide feature on and off. If you're collaborating on a document, turn on Track Changes before making major revisions so collaborators can see the contributions you've made. Thanks for letting us know! Tell us why! Page breaks can help make the copy flow or mess up the entire look of your Microsoft Word document. Here's how to delete a bunch of page breaks at once so you can start over and make it right. Manual page breaks in Microsoft Word are frowned upon by most of us because they don't allow the content to flow naturally. When you add or delete content, a manual page break can have unintended consequences. If you spot the problem, great. If you don't, you might be embarrassed. Sometimes inherited documents have a lot of them, making modifications troublesome. In this article, I'll show you how to quickly delete manual page breaks so you can rework a document's flow with ease. SEE: 69 Excel tips every user should master (TechRepublic)I'm using Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 64-bit system, but you can work with older versions. There's no demonstration file; you won't need one. The Replace feature options used in this article aren't supported by the online version. Why would I need to delete page breaks?Although you should use manual page breaks sparingly, when you must force a new page, simply press Ctrl+Enter. You can also insert a page break by clicking the Insert tab and then clicking Page Break in the Pages group. These breaks often cause trouble when they don't flow with the document's content the way you want, and they are often hard to find. SEE: TechRepublic Premium editorial calendar: IT policies, checklists, toolkits, and research for download (TechRepublic Premium)To delete a page break, position the cursor at the beginning of the next page and press Delete. Or click the Show/Hide option in the Paragraph group on the Home tab to display the visual page break, highlight it, and press Delete. Deleting a few manual page breaks isn't difficult but deleting dozens or maybe more in a long document would be tedious work at best. How to delete multiple page breaks in WordAs I mentioned, deleting a few is easy. When you need to delete many, you can use Word's Replace feature. Doing so, you can browse through the entire document and choose which page breaks to delete or you can delete them all and take your chances. By that I mean you might not want to delete every manual page break, but my experiences make it easy to recommend that you remove them all and start over. Now, let's look at the Replace option for removing manual page breaks: Click Replace in the Editing group on the Home tab or press Ctrl+H. (Open a blank file and insert a few manual page breaks so you have something to work with.) In the resulting dialog, click More to expand the dialog (if necessary). Click in the Find What control. Click Special and choose Manual Page Break from the list shown in Figure A. Doing so will add ^m to the Find What control. (You can't enter ^m from the keyboard; it won't work.) Leave the Replace With control empty. For our purposes, click Replace All. When Word displays the number of replacements made, click OK. Figure AChoose Manual Page Break. If you change your mind, click Ctrl+z to undo the deletions. Some things to noteReplace remembers the last settings. That means you can replace the contents of the Find What control, run the task, and not get the expected results. Always remember to clear the Replace With control and click the No Formatting option before running the task. SEE: Software as a Service (SaaS): A cheat sheet (free PDF) (TechRepublic)In addition, deleting all those page breaks will seem to have no effect if Track Changes is on. You'll usually know if it is, but you might not think to turn it off before deleting the breaks. To quickly turn it off, press Ctrl+Shift+e. We've worked with manual line breaks, but you can use Replace to remove manual line breaks and many other special characters. Study the list in Figure A if you're not familiar with what's available. You might find yourself using Replace more often!Stay tunedWhenever possible, you should avoid inserting a manual page break. If you find that you're entering them often and the circumstances are similar, you might consider a style instead. In a future article, I'll show you how to add a page break to a style.
