Classroom 02-111B

Welcome to Marine Science! This course is designed to provide students a hands-on, real-life experience into the world around them. Based on the scientific method, this program is designed to target and improve students’ scientific process skills and basic knowledge of marine ecosystems. Students will also become familiar with basic aquarium maintenance. The first semester will focus on marine science while the second semester will cover marine biology. We will be discussing how this relates to our local area. Please be ready to discuss current events and technologies.

Classroom Expectations: The rules for this class are simple.

BE ON TIME: Be in your seat and ready to work when the last bell rings.

• REMAIN SEATED UNTIL THE BELL RINGS: Do not line up at the door.

• This includes the school-wide 20/10 Rule.

• COME TO CLASS PREPARED: Be ready to work; it is impossible to learn without the proper supplies.

• SHOW RESPECT: Respect your instructor and fellow classmates by being attentive and that respect will be returned. Show respect for the equipment and materials or you will be given an alternative assignment.

• NO FOOLING AROUND: This is a laboratory with live organisms.

• NO Food or drink except water in sealed bottles

• Electronic Use: You may refer to the Student Code of Conduct for more information on this county policy.

• Cell phone use is only allowed when teacher approval has been given.

• Failure to comply will result in disciplinary referral.

• Cell phones will be in backpack/purse OUT OF SIGHT during class and away from student (backpack) during all assessments. You may give your device a vacation during class by placing it in the “Phone Resort”.

Textbook: Marine Science; McGraw Hill, 2016 (Castro, Huber)

We will use the textbook frequently for our study, but outside resources will be frequent. You can access the textbook from the icon on ClassLink. “McGraw Hill ConnectEd”

Supplies: Organization is essential for success in every class. To help stay organized, you will need:

• 3-ring binder (>1 inch)

• Pens/pencils

• Colored pencils

• Access to the internet

• Headphones

• Highlighter

• Loose leaf and graph paper

• Optional items: ruler, scissors and glue sticks.

FOCUS CODES

EXC = excused, does not count towards grade

AB = absent, counts as a 0 until work is made up

NTI = not turned in, counts as a 0

“*” = grade has not been entered into grade book yet

A safety contract is required to work in the lab. Working in the lab is a privilege.

TOPIC OUTLINE

1st Semester: Marine Science

This is a study of the mechanics of our oceans and the many ecosystems within it; water chemistry, currents, tides, plate movements, weather, technology, and the history of marine science.

➢ Semester exam will include all topics covered.

2nd Semester: Marine Biology

This is a basic study of all phyla and ecosystems of the ocean. We will begin with phytoplankton and end with marine mammals. We will also look at the evolution of organisms, and the way in which energy moves within diverse ecosystems. A good understanding of the fundamentals of biology will be very helpful at this time.

➢ Final exam will focus on topics covered during the semester but will include some concepts from 1st semester.

➢ We will dissect organisms this semester

Laboratory Safety Agreement

1. Safety apparel (goggles and aprons) will be worn when specified by the instructor as long as you are in the lab.

2. When hot plates are being used by anyone in the lab, long hair will be tied back. Long hanging necklaces, heavy jewelry, and bulky jackets or sweaters should be removed. Keep hot plates toward the middle of the lab tables. Use tongs and/or protective gloves to handle hot objects. Never reach across a hot surface, open flame or burner.

3. There will be no gum, no eating or drinking of any kind in the lab.

4. Never taste chemicals/specimens or smell them directly. Avoid touching chemicals as much as possible.

5. Activities will be done only as instructed with the specified amounts of materials.

6. Proper procedures for handling all equipment and any additional safety precautions, which are discussed for specific labs, will be followed.

7. Help keep plants and animals that you use safe.

8. Never leave an activity unattended unless instructed to do so.

9. Horseplay or other inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.

10. Report all accidents to the teacher immediately, no matter how minor.

11. Do not remove any materials or equipment from the lab without the teacher’s permission.

12. After completing an activity, all equipment should be put away and materials should be disposed of as directed. Remember, the sinks are not trashcans.

13. Before leaving the room, each work area will be cleaned.

I agree to follow the Science safety rules.
