|JOB SUMMARY |

| |

|The Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) is a registered nurse who is accountable for the effective coordination of pediatric care of patients/families in the |

|University Hospital and The American Center (TAC) Emergency Departments. The PECC oversees the program of care for pediatric patients in the Emergency Department and |

|is also a strong resource and role model to Emergency Department staff to direct provision of pediatric nursing emergency care. The PECC works in close collaboration |

|with the Medical Director for Pediatric Emergency Medicine as well as members of the Emergency Department management team. |

| |

|The PECC is an active member of the Pediatric and Emergency Services interdisciplinary team and collaborates in the development, execution, and evaluation of the |

|interdisciplinary plan of care. The PECC considers factors related to ethics, safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering care. |

| |

|To maintain competencies in Pediatric ED nursing, the PECC works as a Peds ED staff RN at the University Hospital Emergency Department for approximately 0.4 FTE of this|

|1.0 FTE role. |

| |

|The PECC establishes goals and strategies for meeting the continuing care needs of the pediatric emergency patient, family, and/or other care provider. The PECC |

|provides care in collaboration with other Emergency Department nursing staff members and management/leadership. |

| |

|The PECC utilizes research findings and evidence-based practice to further improve the program of care for the pediatric emergency patient population. The PECC |

|demonstrates knowledge of, leads, and participates in improving organizational performance activities, quality reviews, documentation audits, and action planning and |

|implementation. The nurse coordinator acquires and maintains knowledge in pediatric emergency nursing practice and assumes responsibility for the professional |

|development of self, other nursing staff, and students. The PECC works collaboratively with the Emergency Department Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nursing Education |

|Specialists to plan and execute Pediatric specific training of Emergency Department staff, including orientees and students. |

| |

|The PECC works with the interdisciplinary team to assure that systems of care are in place for patients to move across the continuum of care. This includes development |

|of patient care protocols, order sets, and systems that allow care to take place in an effective and efficient manner. The PECC also puts systems in place to evaluate |

|the effectiveness of patient care. |

|MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES |

| |

|A. Clinical Practice and Leadership |

| |

|Works with nursing and medical staff to identify issues of concern and solve problems in caring for the pediatric emergency patient. |

|Enforces adherence to hospital and department policies and procedures. |

|Collaborates with nursing staff to develop nursing standards of care for pediatric emergency patients. |

|Serves as a role model to other nursing personnel by demonstrating effective direct patient care, leadership, and professional behavior. |

|Assists in the orientation of new Emergency Department Pediatric RNs. |

|Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Services and Medical Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, serves as liaison to inpatient nursing at AFCH, UW |

|primary care providers, and any other medical resources needed to integrate services for the continuum of care of the pediatric emergency patient. |

|Supports program growth and development with concurrent benchmarking of best practice and outreach education. |

|Oversees the stocking and monitoring of pediatric and mother/baby equipment and medication availability. |

| |

|B. Maintenance of Quality Care |

| |

|Leads the development and updating of policies and procedures for the care of the pediatric emergency patient. Assures these policies are approved and periodically |

|reviewed by the appropriate committee. |

|Develops, maintains, and evaluates emergency pediatric patient care standards for the Emergency Department. |

|Monitors nursing activities and practice performance related to pediatric emergency patient care, including nursing documentation. Follows up with staff as appropriate |

|under the direction of ED Management team. |

|Coordinates nursing management of pediatric emergency patient care in the emergency department. |

|Acts as a clinical resource to Emergency Department staff through provision of patient care and coordination of care. |

|Maintains own pediatric nursing skills by staffing a minimum 16 hours per week in the Emergency Department Pediatrics area. |

|Supports patient advocacy and the patient’s Bill of Rights. |

| |

|C. Education/Outreach/Research |

| |

|Facilitates ED nursing continuing education in pediatrics and provides orientation for new staff members and students. |

|Supports and/or participates in research programs approved by the Hospital and the University as appropriate under the direction of Emergency Department leadership. |

|Participates in patient, family, and staff teaching. |

|Supports and/or participates in community outreach programs as appropriate under the direction of Emergency Department management. |

|Develops appropriate written patient education materials. |

|Interprets and supports the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures which guide personnel, patients, and the public. |

|Creates an environment in which staff learning is supported and stimulated. |

|Assist Pediatric Emergency Department nursing staff in development, design, and follow-through on Pediatric related research projects. |

|Supports use of and seeks out evidence-based practice in the development of Pediatric protocols. |

| | |CPR certification, ENPC, and PALS verification within 6 months of hire |
