Latin 7 - Quia

Latin 7 Nomen_______________________

Unit V Grammar

I. Look at these English sentences:

He sees the woman.

The woman sees him.

You can see that in these English sentences, the word ‘he’ changes depending on whether he is the DOER of the action or the RECIEVER of the action. The doer is the _________ of a sentence. The receiver is the _________________ of the sentence.

In English, other than a few examples like those above, the direct object is only indicated by its position after the verb. E.G.

The dog chases the chicken.

The chicken chases the dog.

A. Given these English sentences, label the subjects “S” and the direct objects “DO”.

a. Sextus pushes the statue into the fishpond.

b. Soon the girls will climb the tree.

c. The slave gave the letter to the messenger.

d. Since Sextus doesn’t like Cornelia, he often annoys her.

II. In Latin, direct object, like subject, is indicated by case (word endings).

The nominative case indicates the subject of the Latin sentence.

The accusative case indicates the direct object of the Latin sentence.
