Skill based learning:

• Using scientific inquiry skills (observing, hypothesizing, questioning, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, etc…)

• Using scientific tools to measure and gather information (graduated cylinders, beakers, thermometers, balances, microscopes, etc…)

• Using scientific journals and articles as resources to conduct background research for projects and experiments.

Grading: Students can receive an effort grade of:

1= “Emerging”

2= “Meeting Expectations”

3= “Exceeding Expectations”

The effort score is based on class participation, work completion, and following directions during lab activities. Students will receive a final score on their report cards in the form of an average percentage. This grade will be determined upon, homework, observations, unit/chapter assessments, and written lab and classwork.

Points will be assigned for daily lab work, homework, projects, class participation, and tests.

• Daily Work

o Examples: Lab notes, worksheets, group work, and lab activities and experiments.

o Daily work is critical to understanding of concepts/content.

• Homework will be done with the aid of the science textbooks, lab notes, and assigned appropriate

web sites. Homework will typically be assigned 1-2 times a week.

• Projects

o Examples: multimedia presentations, online video-based projects, Conservation pamphlet, famous scientist biography, etc…

o Projects will typically be worth 50-100 points.

o Assignment sheets for projects will be distributed and available online upon the assignment of a given task.

• Tests and Exams

o Tests will be conducted at the conclusion of every chapter.

o Students will be given a study guide for a test a minimum of 3 days prior to the test date.

• Online Grade book

o All grades be entered in my online grade book at – each student will have a unique login to check his/her grades each day as they are updated.
