Course Description The purpose of this course is to engage students in the wonders of biology, while considering the scientific process. The first semester focuses on cellular biology, heredity, evolution, and classification. Students will be introduced to global problems and encouraged to develop creative problem-solving strategies.

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

Notes:

*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.

~Elementary schools will utilize P (pass) and F (fail) in Health/Physical Education, Music, World Languages, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.

|DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|STUDENT PROGRESS |Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each |

| |semester.  The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate |

| |deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of|

| |the students. See Board Policy IH. |

|ACADEMIC INTEGRITY |Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing |

| |false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or |

| |password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development |

| |Handbook. |

|HOMEWORK |Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience. |

| |Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience.  It should be considered the |

| |possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB.|

| |Ms. Lampkins’ Homework |

| |Homework for the week is provided and written on the board every Monday morning. Students will be required to |

| |complete one written homework assignment each week. They are expected to start and/or continue reading the |

| |current chapter in addition to the written assignments for the week including weekly vocabulary. All written |

| |homework is due and collected on Friday at the start of class. The assignment for the week must be completed |

| |and turned in on time for full credit to be given. |

|MAKE-UP WORK |When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently |

|DUE TO ABSENCES |beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days |

| |absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA. |

| |Make-up work- Announced work, such as homework, quizzes and major assessments are due the day the student |

| |returns. If a student is absent under extenuating circumstances, special arrangements can be made to make up |

| |work. |

| |Makeup work should have the correct heading and the specific assignment detail so that the work can be |

| |identified. |

| | |

| |Work that is not turned in on time will receive reduced points 1 day = -10 points, 2days= -20 points, 3 days= |

| |-30 points, a maximum of 60 points will be given for work over 3 days late |

| | |

| |Students are expected to put a complete heading on all work. The heading should include first & last name, |

| |date, & period. Student will lose 5 points for missing any part of the header. All work is expected to be |

| |completed on the correct side of paper and neatness is encouraged. Students must use blue or black ink pens or |

| |pencils. Papers turned in without a name will not be graded, placed in no name folder and 20 points will be |

| |deducted once identified. |

| |IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK THE HOMEWORK BOARD/CALENDAR AND/OR REQUEST MISSED WORK. Missed |

| |tests and quizzes will be arranged between the student and teacher. |

|SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS |Students must adhere to the DCSS Student Code of Conduct, as well as specific class rules. |

| |Pens, notebook and textbook everyday |

| |Enter class quietly and begin working on the opening |

| |Keep hands and feet to yourself |

| |No food or drinks allowed in classroom (NO GUM) |

| |NO texting or using cell phone in class. |

| |Weekly Assignments |

| |Each day students are required to enter the room quietly and begin work immediately on the opening. All |

| |classwork is expected to be completed in class and turned in when requested. Each unit will have a project |

| |assigned as well as other mini projects that can be completed in 1-2 days. Outside research will be required |

| |for major projects. |

| |Tests/Quizzes |

| |Tests will be given over material approximately every 2 weeks. Vocabulary quizzes will be given almost every |

| |Friday. Words will be provided at the beginning of each unit or week. |
