You are involved in the launch of a new magazine for teenagers. This magazine is designed to help teenagers deal with issues, problems and concerns, particulalry relating to the topic of sexuality. It also aims to help teens make responsible lifestyle choices and decisions in general.

Using what you have learned in Life Orientation so far, you are required to complete Section A, B, C and D of this task as well as provide a reference list – stating the sources of the information you have used. These sections must be combined and presented as part of a magazine.

All of your work must be digitally produced and printed and handed to your teacher on or before the due date. Please ensure you save a digital version of the task. 5 marks of this task will be allocated to the overall appearance, presentation and attention to detail evident in the task.

Your magazine will be assessed according to the rubric provided. A copy of the rubric must be handed in with your final product.

ACTIVITY 1

1. Think of an appropriate name for the magazine.

2. Design an A4 size cover for the magazine. Be sure to place the catchy titles of at least 5 articles readers would find in this magazine (not just a picture and title). Remember that you are the target market for this magazine, so it must be something you would want to read.

3. The cover of the magazine must include the name of the magazine, catchy article titles and suitable pictures. This magazine cover will be the front page of your project.

ACTIVITY 2

Many teenagers today are sexually active yet very few have an accurate knowledge of the risks associated with sexual contact.

You will use the information you have learned in Life Orientation classes and information you attain through research and compile a feature for your magazine entitiled “MYTHBUSTERS: The truth about HIV and other STD’s”.

In this section you will choose 5 myths (inaccurate ideas) that people have about HIV and STD’s, list them and then provide accurate, well-researched information about the truth relating to these ideas.

ACTIVITY 3

As the editor of this magazine, it is your responsibility to respond to e-mails sent by teen readers to an advice column regarding questions about sexuality and other important issues facing teenagers.

A teenager has written to you and asked you about abstinence and for 10 good reasons to say NO to sex.

You will write a brief column listing your “Top 10 reasons to say NO.”

You will need to think very carefully about all the potential consequences of having sex as a teenager and respond to with realistic, relevant information and advice. You will need to show maturity, sencerity and understanding in your response.

ACTIVITY 4

Write one informative, original feature article for the magazine addressing any issue pertaining to teenage relationships, goal setting, time management or sexuality, which will serve as useful information for teenagers. The article should be approximately 200 words in length.

REFERENCE LIST

Remember that you need to list ALL the sources of your information. This includes magazine articles, books, internet sites and even interviews!

List your references in the alphabetical order and include the name of the author/owner, name of the book/website and the date of when you used the resource for the first time.
