Course Description

This course serves as a foundation for all higher level mathematics courses. It focuses on the development of functions and the understanding of functional relationships. Students investigate algebra through problem-solving in real-world situations. Students will participate in developing tables, coordinate graphing, algebraic analysis and linear and quadratic equations and their graphs using appropriate technology.

– FBISD High School Program Guide

The major units of study are outlined below:

Semester 1 Semester 2

Solving Equations Linear Functions and Linear Inequalities

Solving Inequalities Solve and Write Systems of Equations and Inequalities

Exploring Functions Polynomials

Linear Functions Quadratic Functions

Other Non-Linear Functions

Materials Needed

• Textbook – Algebra I, McDougal Littell– Larson, Boswell, Kanold & Stiff

Online Textbook at Activation Code: see teacher

• Graphing Calculator: TI Nspire. I have a set of 30 for the students to use during the class time. If you decide to purchase your own, please consider donating the coupon that comes with the purchase.

• Pencils

• Spiral or 3 Ring Binder (w/ notebook paper and dividers)

• Helpful items: Highlighter, Dry-Erase Marker, Ruler

• Classroom supplies (just to be nice to the teacher):

• box of Kleenex

• 2 – 4 dry erase markers

• hand sanitizer

Evaluation

• Term grade: Major grades will count as 50% and Daily grades will count as 50%. There will be at least 3 major grades (tests or projects) and 11 daily grades (2 homework grades and 9 quizzes) in a grading period.

• Semester and Year Averages: Refer to the district policy of the Parent/Student Handbook

Grades can be monitored in Skyward. To be successful, keep up with the course work on a daily basis, ask appropriate questions, stay connected via the class website, seek help outside of class (tutorials) and study for quizzes and tests.

Grading Policies

• At least 9 quizzes will be given each grading period and each quiz will count as one daily grade.

• Homework will be given daily and can be checked for completion, accuracy, and/or by a homework quiz.

• There will be 2 homework averages (one for the first half of the term and one for the second half)

• Tests will be graded for accuracy of work as well as answers. Tests will be kept in the class at all times.

• No credit will be given for any assignment, quiz or test handed in without work, if work is required.

• Clements Math Department Late Work Policy:

• Daily HW – 1 day late will result in a 50, 2 days late will result in a 0

• Projects, Packets, Activities assigned over multiple days – 1 day -15, 2 days -10, 3 days -5, 4 days -5, 5 days -5, more than 5 days 0

Retesting Policy: Students that have a Test average (all the Tests given during the Term) that is below a 75 will have the opportunity to take a Cumulative Term Test at the end of the grading period. The cumulative test grade will replace each individual test grade (during that grading period) with a grade up to a 75, only if the retest grade is higher than the major average for the term.

Expectations

• Students will respect all others in the classroom – fellow students, Ms. Kitagawa, and any visitors. This also includes someone else’s property.

• Students will arrive on time to class with all necessary materials.

• Students will be organized with the spiral/binder and with materials that are handed out or graded.

• Students will complete assignments on time. Homework will be due the following day at the beginning of the period unless stated by the teacher. Extra time will not be given for any situation (HW, test, quiz, etc.) unless a student has that particular modification/accommodation.

• Students will follow the school and district policies as specified in the student handbook.

• PARTICIPATE: Classroom participation is not only answering questions, but it is also asking questions. Please seek help during class or at tutorials if needed. Take responsibility for your own learning. (

• ABSENCES: It is the student’s responsibility to turn in the assignments missed, and obtain any notes and/or worksheets. Make-up tests or quizzes will be given before or after school and will be made up within the same number of days the student was absent. If the test is not made up within the appropriate time, the student will receive a “0".

If a student is only absent on the day of a test or quiz, the student will be expected to make up the test or quiz on the day upon his/her return.

Tutorials: Posted Times – Monday, Thursday, and Friday mornings (7:00 – 7:20)

• I’m usually available for tutoring before and after school, except for Wednesdays when I have to be at my duty post in the commons (students are welcome to meet me there). Please check with me if you know you would like to come on a certain day or time. I will always try to make myself available if help is needed.

• My conference period is 1st period this year if you need to stop by with a question.

Please feel free to come to me with any questions or concerns. My goal is to make this a meaningful and enjoyable year for all of my students.
