ALGEBRA I Evaluation and Procedures

Smart’s Mill Middle School

ALGEBRA 1 2015 -2016

INSTRUCTOR: Mrs. Lavanya Penmetsa ROOM: A-10 E-MAIL: lavanya.penmetsa@

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN AND COURSE OBJECTIVES

In Algebra 1, the focus of Mathematics is to build on the sequential development of concepts and skills by using concrete materials to assist students in making the transition from the arithmetic to the symbolic. They will make connections and build relationships between algebra, arithmetic, geometry, probability and statistics. Students will make connections to other subject areas through practical application, engage in discourse about mathematics with teachers and other students, and attach meaning to the abstract concept of algebra. Calculators, computers, and graphing utilities will be utilized frequently.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

• You are expected to be in your seat when the bell rings.

• Come prepared for Algebra 1 class. This means you have all your supplies with you each day and are attentive.

• Show respect for yourself and those around you.

• Absolutely No food or beverages are permitted in the classroom. Clear water bottles are ok with lids.

• A hall pass is required to leave the room. Only ask for a hall pass if there is an emergency! When you are not in class you miss valuable information critical to your success. Only one person is permitted to leave the room at a time.

• Cell phones will be placed securely at Mrs. Penmetsa’s desk when a student leaves the room with a pass.

• All student handbook policies will be enforced.

GRADING POLICY

Grading is calculated using the simplest formula possible: (Points Earned)/ (Points Possible) x 100%. We have adopted this grading policy, as a school, in an effort to streamline student self-evaluation and to place equal emphasis on each component of the student’s grade. Students will be responsible for understanding and retaining pertinent information.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

• Homework is mandatory and checked on a daily and is a critical component to your success in this class. Effort includes showing all your work, which includes sketching any diagrams related to the question. Answers are always posted on my website or in the textbook. You can ask questions on your homework when we go over it the next day. You may always email me questions!!!! Your homework is your first study guide for any quiz or test and therefore must be all-inclusive.

• All make-up homework must be handed in by the date of the unit test.

• Homework assignments are for your benefit and are designed to help you learn the material and prepare and study for quizzes and tests. Most importantly, I am looking for your work, not just your answer. No work, no partial credit. This will also be true for all assignments, quizzes, and tests.

• Please do all homework in pencil. Always include your name, date and assignment page and numbers in the upper right hand corner of your paper.

WARM-UPS/EXIT SLIPS:

• These are to be done on an individual basis and may be collected and graded at the teachers’ discretion.

BINDER:

• All papers must be kept in this binder. You must bring your binder to class every day.

• Please label your dividers in the binder with these tabs; (1) Notes; (2) Homework; (3) Quizzes and Tests; (4) Problem Sets; and (5) Warm Ups. Loose-leaf paper that is college ruled should be in the back of everyone’s binder.

ABSENCES and TARDIES:

Mathematics is not a subject in which you can do well without attending class. It is to your benefit to not miss class unless absolutely necessary. You can download notes and homework from my website to keep up with what we cover in class. In accordance with school policy, I will adhere strictly to the guideline that any student not in the room at the time the bell rings is considered tardy. In the event of a student absence on a scheduled test date, the test will be made up outside of normally scheduled class time and in a timely manner.

EXTRA HELP:

If you are struggling in the class, please do not wait to seek extra help. Mrs. Penmetsa is available for extra help after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

RE-TAKE POLICY:

Smart’s Mill has a school-wide policy on retakes. It is required of students who score less than 70% on an assessment to first relearn and then retest on those concepts not mastered. As a part of relearning the student must fix the mistakes on the quiz and have turned in all homework assignments. Scores between 70% and 80% may be retaken, but must be retaken within 2 weeks of posted in Phoenix. The maximum score on retakes is 80%.

TEXTBOOK POLICY:

You will have a textbook assigned to you at the start of the year, and you are responsible for that book until the end of the year. It is strongly suggested that you keep the book covered to avoid paying damages. I have a class set of books in the classroom to use, and there is an online textbook.

CALCULATOR POLICY:

Graphing calculators will be used in class this year in both algebra 1 . I have a class set of TI-84 Plus CE calculators for student use in class only. These calculators may NOT be taken out of my classroom for any reason. You may purchase your own (any style of TI-83 or 84) to use outside of class. You may also go to the library on your own time and check one out, just like a book.

ALL of the above information in this document is subject to change at the teachers’, department, or district discretion. Students will be notified if there are any changes.

By signing below, you indicate that you understand the policies and procedures in my classroom. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My e-mail address is listed at the top of this document. Math Rocks!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lavanya Penmetsa
