right45500SISS Curriculum Overview 2019Week 1 – ‘Test Yourself’ – Challenge and teamwork (Windermere) Theme: The first week will be held on the edge of Lake Windermere, and there will be an emphasis on students working together and pushing themselves to complete challenging tasks. In the classroom (or our outdoor Yurt!), we will focus on getting to know and support each other, building our communication skills and refreshing our grammatical knowledge, whatever level the students currently have. Activities: Welcome bonfire, raft-building, arts & crafts, ‘pamper pole’ challenge and disco. Language: Getting to know each other; modals of possibility; giving directions. Excursion: Juniors will visit the World of Beatrix Potter, where they will watch an interactive show all about the famous British author who lived locally. All students will visit Manchester, taking in the observatory at Jodrell Bank (Juniors) and Old Trafford Stadium (Seniors) before shopping in the Trafford Centre. On Saturday, students will take part in a Journey Day challenge, working together and following clues to navigate their way around the lake. At the end of the week, all students will challenge themselves on the high ropes at Treetop Trek. Week 2 – ‘Explore’ – Travel and tourism (Casterton) Theme: In the second week, students will return to our Casterton campus to discuss the excitement of exploring new places, from summer festivals to gap years and discuss places they are curious about visiting in the future.Activities: Boys vs Girls, ‘Trashion Show’, Zorbing, ghyll scrambling & more. Language: Depending on their level, students will review past tenses to write travel blogs based on their experiences, and future tenses will help plan their trip to Edinburgh later in the week. Excursion: During the week, Juniors will visit the local post office to practice asking for and writing post cards in English, which they can send home to their parents. The seniors will create their own online travel quizzes to test their friends. On excursion day, the students will do their own exploring, visiting the exciting Camera Obscura next to Edinburgh Castle, where they will have fun travelling through rooms full of different illusions, tricks of light and perspective. After this, they will wander down the Royal Mile, where they are sure to see a bagpipe player while shopping for Scottish souvenirs. Week 3 – ‘Get Creative’ – Music and Media Theme: The focus this week will be on music, photography, art and movies, with students exploring vocabulary surrounding traditional and modern media.Activities: Traditional Games, Water Wars, BBQ & bonfire, movie night, Talent Show. Language: Students will cover grammar such as conditionals, relative clauses and the present perfect, as well as having the opportunity to produce their own film. Excursion: While the Seniors make music videos, our Juniors will enjoy some local artistic and musical workshops to get their creative juices flowing. All students will explore the interactive Liverpool Beatles’ Story, learning more about the musical phenomenon, and visit Liverpool One shopping centre. We will end the week with our ‘Best of British’ day, this year themed around the legendary Robin Hood, with archery included in the activities. Week 4 ‘Making Millions’ – Business & IndustryTheme: Students will discuss consumer society, shopping, brands and businesses around the world. They will learn vocabulary related to different industries, such as fashion and farming. Activities: Boys vs Girls, Trashion Show, Zorbing, Movie Night, BBQ with inflatables at Sedbergh school (combined with British sports course pupils).Language: Students will study the passive voice and future tenses, as well as a range of vocabulary related to business, technology, inventions and industry. Excursion: Juniors will visit a local working farm to experience life as a British farmer, while Seniors will create and present their own businesses in our Dragon’s Den contest. As well as their exciting trip to London’s Science Museum (also stopping to look at Buckingham Palace and shopping in Harrod’s), students will have the opportunity to experience stand-up paddle-boarding and kayaking on Lake Windermere. They will work together to get across the lake and enjoy lunch on a private island before racing each other back to the start.Week 5 – ‘Global Flavours’ – Food and Cooking Theme: This week, students will explore the fascinating subject of food from around the world and will test their own culinary abilities! Students will be able to try new flavours and show off their own country’s most famous dishes. Activities: Traditional Games, Water Wars, BBQ with inflatables at Sedbergh school (combined with British sports course pupils), Casino Night and of course, this week would not be complete without our MasterChef competition!Language: Descriptive language, menu and recipe writing, giving instructions, idiomatic expressions. Excursion: Juniors will visit the Churchmouse cheese shop in the nearby village of Barbon, where they will taste and rate a variety of local cheeses. All students will visit the historic York Minster, followed by the Chocolate Story for Juniors and the spooky York Dungeons for Seniors. We end the week with another visit to the Treetops, this time to the Nets. Week 6 – ‘Nature’ – Animals and the Environment (Sedbergh) Theme: After moving to our Sedbergh campus, we will explore the natural world, discussing everything from animals and weather to climate change. Students will be able to use their new knowledge on their trip to Chester Zoo. Activities: Boys vs Girls, recycled art project, BBQ with inflatables at Sedbergh school (combined with British sports course pupils), orienteering and a movie night. Language: Comparatives and superlatives, justifying opinions, reading and listening for specific information, speculating and agreeing. Excursion: This week, Juniors will visit the wonderful Lakeland Wildlife Oasis Park, while all students will have a chance to meet over 21,000 animals at Chester Zoo, where they will enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor attractions, from the lions and giraffes to the bat cave and orangutan house. After the zoo, they will enjoy some shopping at the nearby Cheshire Oaks Outlet store. They will also take a trip to nearby Coniston Lake, to try pizza-making in the outdoors following by canoeing! Week 7 – ‘Tradition’ – History and Heritage Theme: For the last week of the course, we will return to our roots, discussing history and tradition. We will discuss famous people and events from history in all areas, from Henry VIII to the Titanic, and students will be able to take away a greater understanding of the heritage of Sedbergh school itself and their own place in its ever-changing history. Activities: Traditional Games, Water Wars, fell walking and disco. Language: mixed past tenses, narrative tenses, describing historic attractions, reading for detail, the third conditional. Excursion: All students will feel like Harry Potter when they hop on the steam train to visit nearby Muncaster Castle, to see owls and falcons and get lost in the maze. We will also take our second trip to London, to visit the fearsome Tower of London, followed by a boat trip up the River Thames. ................
