| |The Big Picture: |

| |As World War II came to an end, a new conflict began between the United States and the Soviet Union known as the Cold War. This began as a conflict between different ideologies (a |

| |series of beliefs of a nation). The USSR tried to expand communism throughout the world while the USA tried to promote democracy. The USA used “containment” to successfully stop |

| |the spread of communism in Western Europe in the 1940s. But, the USA experienced failures in the 1950s and 1960s as communism spread through Asia and Latin America. New |

| |technologies led to a space race while military advances led to a nuclear arms race and near nuclear war. Attempts in the 1970s and 1980s to thaw the Cold War and reduce nuclear |

| |missiles failed to bring an end to the conflict. The Cold War came to an end only because of the economic collapse of communist nations in Eastern Europe by 1989 and the breakup |

| |of the Soviet Union by 1991. |
