PRESS RELEASE

Tubuna determined to accomplish her dream

Suva, Fiji Islands.

¡°My focus will always remain on my dream of graduating in the blue gown from the

Bachelor of Laws programme as there are expectations of many embedded with the

realisation of this dream.¡±

Iowane Tubuna of Nalidi Nakorotubu, Ra was beaming with excitement as she attended the

College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies (CBHTS) orientation session with more

than 350 students on Nasinu campus earlier today.

Tubuna, who comes from a farming background, said she was fortunate to have been given

Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS) to study at the Fiji National University.

She used to travel 7 km daily in a Carriers to attend high school and said she was always

determined to get enrolled at the national university.

¡°My parents are dalo and yaqona farmers. From the six siblings, my two elder brothers and

sister help my parents on the farm. I am the fourth eldest and the younger two are also

schooling,¡± Tubuna said.

¡°I always dreamt of studying at a tertiary institution so that I can pursue the career of my

choice after which I will also be able to help my parents financially and assist my other

siblings with their studies. I want to make my family proud and give them the rewards of

their sacrifices in helping me reach up to this place in life.¡±

¡°Currently, I am trying to adjust to the city life. The lifestyle here is somewhat different

from how we live back in the village where you will get to see more greenery but it is more

buildings and cars here. The dressing style is also quite different with pace of life being so

fast,¡± Tubuna added.

College Dean, Professor Ram Karan encouraged the students to be divergent thinkers. He

said this type of students generate more creative ideas by exploring many possible

solutions of one problem.

¡°When you are here, you will be told to do things in certain ways but do not be afraid to

differ from what might be expected of you. If you can differ and justify than you should be

rewarded for that. We are here to help you develop your potentials,¡± said Professor Karan.
