WRITING ASSIGNMENT FOR TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

WRITING ASSIGNMENT FOR TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

When we return to school after the break, you’re going to write an essay in class about the novel. In preparation for that assignment, you’ll have a week to plan what your essay will include. Give careful thought to the chart I gave you. Then decide on a topic you want to write about. Finally, write the following three elements of an outline for your essay.

An introductory paragraph that takes a position about your topic and names two or more subtopics.

For each subtopic, a list of details from the novel you will use to support your position.

A concluding paragraph in which you make a statement related to your topic, but different from what

you’ve already covered.

REMINDER: The steps in the chart show that you should not write your introduction until you know exactly what the body paragraphs will contain.

OTHER REMINDER: The kind of conclusion I’m looking for takes thought. DO NOT simply restate anything that will appear in the introduction or the body.

You’ll receive one grade for evidence that you planned your essay carefully, and two more grades for the essay you write in class.

Here are some aspects of the novel you might consider in arriving at a topic you want to write about.

Two or more characteristics that show how characters are similar

Two or more characteristics that show how characters are different

Harper Lee’s reasons for choosing to include two or more specific characters

Incidents in the novel that reveal a particular personality trait of a character

Explanations that Harper Lee should have included (with your reasons)

Incidents she should have left out (with your reasons)

Analysis of how any two incidents illustrate a theme of the novel

Analysis of the final conversation between Atticus and Heck Tate
