The Media Assignment

/50 marks

|Part 1: The Letter Due: |

Learning Goals:

I understand…

□ the audience and techniques used to target certain demographic(s) through media

□ documentary film techniques and their rhetorical use

□ tone and mood and its significance in creating meaning through message

□ bias and how it is used or not used

Letter Structure

You will find an example of an advertisement from the media that you have strong feelings about and write a letter to the company of that ad conveying your feelings about their message. You may choose an advertisement that you adore or abhor, but must clearly outline your position. Hand in your letter, a copy of the ad, and this rubric on the due date.

Structure

• Address the company responsible for the ad in a 400 word letter

• Explain your position and how the product or ideology relates to you as a consumer of that media

• Discuss the repercussions of such a campaign. What is the purpose? Who is the audience? What is the message? Do you agree/disagree with the message and why? What rhetorical strategies are used to convince the audience? (Ethos, Pathos and Logos) What is the tone and mood of the ad?

• Refer to one academic source that supports why this campaign is ineffective or effective and properly cite your reference using MLA format. For example, an ad that sells age-inappropriate clothing to young girls is supported by a scholarly article reviewing the psychological damage to young girls who dress older than their age group

• Use a direct quotation from that academic source to legitimize and support your argument

• Provide a suggestion for a better campaign to sell the product or message
