WORLD HISTORY 10 COURSE OUTLINE

Class Description:

THIS COURSE IS REQUIREDFOR GRADUATION! This one semester class is a survey of World History from the rise of the Renaissance and the role of the Reformation and their impact on the social, political, and economic structure of Western and Eastern Europe. We will also cover the rise of Nation States and the Age of Discovery. We will than study how these fundamental cultural changes led to Imperialism and the Age of Revolutions: The French Revolution, the American Revolution, Industrial Revolution, and the Communist Revolution.

World History Goals and Objectives:

1. Students will learn how the rediscovery of classical knowledge led to a period of creativity and learning known as the Renaissance. As emphasis was placed on the individual, new ideas about religion emerged, which led to the Reformation.

2. Students will analyze the exploration, conquests, and expansion that occurred between 1400-1700

3. Students will evaluate the power of European monarchs and the various challenges they faced.

4. Students will evaluate and describe the effect of new discoveries and ideas about government and society during the Enlightenment.

5. Analyze the events, causes, and the outcomes of the French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, American Revolution, and the rise of political democracy and social justice.

6. Students will analyze how new processes and machines led to dramatic changes in industry and its effects on many aspects of daily life- a period in history known as the Industrial revolution.

7. Students will analyze the age of imperialism from 1800-1920, when European powers ruled over much of Africa and Asia, and the United States influenced its neighbors.

Textbook:

World History: Modern World History is the textbook to be used and will be provided. You will need to supply your own paper to take notes and also a pen and pencil. You will also need to supply a folder for your history work and handouts! You will also be given access to the online textbook.

Grading:

Your grade in World History will be based on a point system. You will earn a certain number of points per assignment. The points earned will be based on the quality of the work turned in and an understanding of the information being covered. Your grade will be determined by the percentage of points that you have earned during the current grading period.

Quizzes and Map Tests:

Quizzes will consist of about 10% to 15% of your grade. We will have 8 to 10 quizzes every grading period. Most quizzes will be a planned part of the weekly schedule. However, I have been known to give an occasional pop quiz. The key to success will be to read and listen in class. We will also be taking map tests over the area of study.

Daily Assignments:

Daily assignments will consist of such things as book questions, map study, worksheets, group projects, and essay questions. It is very important that you turn in your assignments on time. POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR LATE WORK. Late assignments will be dealt with in the following manner:

• ONE DAY LATE, HALF CREDIT

• TWO DAYS LATE, NO CREDIT!!!!!

Chapter Tests:

A major test will be given after each section is completed. A section will usually consist of one or two chapters. Test questions will consist of all or some of the following: multiple choice, true or false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and essay. You will receive an objective sheet on the day that we start a new section. This objective sheet will not only help you on the chapter test, but also your semester final. IF YOU DO NOT MAKE UP A TEST BEFORE WE TAKE THE NEXT ONE, IT IS AN AUTOMATIC ZERO.

Teacher Webpage and Notebook:

All World History powerpoints, test reviews, and other important information will be posted on my webpage, which can be accessed through the district internet page. You are strongly encouraged to keep a notebook of all class documents, including powerpoints, assignments, handouts etc. EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN TO THOSE WHO KEEP NOTEBOOKS!!!

Classroom Procedures and Rules:

1. Come to class prepared to learn and participate!

2. BE ON TIME! Excessive tardiness will lead to a loss of daily points.

3. No food or drink in class except water!!!

4. Phones, I-pads, and other devices will be allowed in class at specific times. These can be used to access the online textbook, Teacher webpage, or other research sites. Abuse of this policy will lead to confiscation of device, which will be turned into the office. THIS POLICY CAN BE CHANGED AT ANY TIME.

REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE!!!!

Late Work Procedures:

Late work will be handled in the following manner:

• If you are absent one day, one day to make up;

• If you are absent two days, two days to make up;

• If you are absent three days, three days to make up

• If you are absent four days, four days to make up;

• If you are absent five or more days, special arrangements will be made with the student and parents.

IF YOU ARE ABSENT, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT ME ABOUT MAKE-UP WORK. CHECK BLACKBOARD FIRST!!! I WILL NOT SEEK YOU OUT!!!! YOU ARE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND I EXPECT YOU TO ACT LIKE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS!! SEE ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER AN ABSENCE TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR MISSING ASSIGNMENTS.
