Journals/Folder:

Each student needs to get a folder or notebook that they can dedicate to this class. This needs to be separate from what they take daily notes in. In this notebook, the student will compile answers to a daily questions/bellwork. These will be collected at random times, and a grade will be earned. Generally, this will be done once a unit (usually on test day) or every few weeks.

School Website

Students will be expected to use the school website with this class. Students need to check the class page at a minimum of once a week, and it is highly recommended to be checked at least 3-5 times a week. There will be some assignments done online only. Other items students can expect to see in Mr. Pitman’s class website include:

1. Announcements: This will include announcements about upcoming tests/quizzes

2. Textbook

3. Powerpoint presentations

4. Various assignments

5. Practice Tests and Quizzes

6. Tests and Quizzes

7. Weblinks to videos and reading

Extra Credit:

I may decide to issue extra credit assignments at various points throughout the semester. It will be up to each student to complete it then. Furthermore, extra credit is just that, EXTRA. Do not come to me at the end of the semester worrying about your grade and wanting extra credit if you haven’t completed you regular assignments in a timely manner.

Student Responsibilities:

1. Be prepared for class.

• This includes having paper, pencil/pen (blue or black ink. If I can’t read it, I won’t grade it), assignments, and any other items that you were told to bring.

2. Be respectful of others.

3. Be willing to learn.

Academic Dishonesty:

Any student caught cheating will get an automatic 0 on the assignment. Also, I will call home to speak with the student’s parents. Referral to the administration may also occur.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated as well. Any assignment that comes back with more than 20% plagiarized will not be graded. If the problem continues, more consequences may follow. SafeAssign is a website that will automatically check assignments for plagiarism.

Electronics/Cell Phones:

Cell phones may be allowed at certain times to access class materials which will be designated by the teacher. If they are being used outside of this time, they will be confiscated until the end of the hour. Repeated abuse will result in referral to the administration. As for other electronic devices (i.e. ipods, cd players, etc.), there may be times when I will allow you to use them, but it will be at my discretion. They will never be considered acceptable during times of tests, quizzes, or lectures. If I haven’t given you permission, don’t have them out. If this becomes a problem, they will not be permitted at all.

Attendance:

I will take attendance for the class when the bell rings each day. If the student comes in late without a pass, or are meandering about the room, the student will be counted as tardy. No excuses. Be in the classroom before the bell rings.

Late Work:

Late work is unacceptable. When I assign something, I expect it to be completed in a timely manner. With this in mind, people who turn in late work will not be awarded as many points as those who turn things in on time. At most, a late assignment will only be given 75% of the total points available. Special circumstances may apply, and these will be judged on a case by case basis (large projects, situations outside of the student’s control, etc.). Furthermore, late work will only be accepted until the completion of the next unit. Finally, any long term assignments (i.e. projects) are due on the assigned due date.

Classroom Procedures:

There are a few key procedures that I will go over in this syllabus, as well as, in class.

Entering the classroom: Find the bellwork, take your seat, and get to work. Remember the tardy policy. Keep in mind, bellwork points add up in a hurry.

Make-up work: If you are absent please collect your assignment upon returning. You will be expected to make it up within the guidelines of the student handbook. (1 class day per class day missed.) Furthermore, no makeup work will be given during the middle of a class period unless it will not cause an interruption. I will also post most assignments on the classroom webiste, so be prepared to use it. Please see me before/after class at some point in time. Make up work is on your shoulders. You are responsible enough to know that if you missed class, then you need to find out the work you must do. The world does not stop turning while you are gone…I promise.

Turning in work: Turn in your homework before class in the appropriate tray for you hour. Even if I forget to remind you, the assignment is still due.
