JNTUA has completed five years of its existence and we are now celebrating the ceremony of its fifth convocation. In a short span of five years, the University stands for academic practices and quality compared to the reputed institutions of the country. During the last five years, we notice a steady progress in terms of student strength, faculty resources, new programmes offered, collaborations, expansion of infrastructural facilities and intensification of co-curricular activities.

The University has made commendable progress during the last year and the report, which I am going to present is a testimony to the fact that the University is progressing in the right direction with well defined goals and objectives in tune with the role it has to play as a major centre of technological education and research in the vast region of Rayalaseema.

I am delighted to present brief outlines of the major activities of the University during the reporting year.

Profile of the University

JNT University Anantapur is established in the year 2008 through A.P. Govt. Act No.30 and has started functioning from the 155 acre campus. The University jurisdiction spans over four districts of Rayalaseema viz., Ananthapuramu, Chittoor, YSR, Kurnool districts and SPSR Nellore district. Though young, the University has made a significant impact in various areas of research and teaching, and continues to strive for excellence. JNTUA envisions to facilitate and nurture the quality of technical education and research in its constituent colleges/units and as well as in all affiliated institutions.

The University is offering B.Tech. courses in 14 different branches of engineering, one B.Pharm and Pharm.D course under UG Programmes and 69 specializations under P.G Programmes which includes 47 M.Tech & 12 M.Pharm. specializations, 05 M.Sc., 03 M.B.A., M.C.A., and Pharm.D.(PB). The contents of these courses are constantly revised to meet the needs of the changing world with focus on quality and excellence.

Besides this, the University has started a new Postgraduate programme, Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) from the academic year 2013-14 onwards which is offered by a consortium of universities in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, USA with the support of State Government of Andhra Pradesh. MSIT has been designed to develop technically competent, highly productive, and self motivated professionals in tune with the demands of an ever changing market.

The University is also offering two M.Tech. degree programmes, VLSI System Design and Embedded Systems, in collaboration with SEER Akademi from the academic year 2013-14 onwards. The programme is more focused on industry oriented practical work.

Institutions

A new University College of Engineering at Kalikiri (Village), Chittoor (District) has been started as one of the constituent colleges of the University from the academic year 2013-14 with B.Tech. courses in five Engineering branches viz., Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering.

The University has the following Constituent colleges/Unit

Research programs in 16 disciplines related to the fields of Technology, Science, Pharmacy, Management studies and Humanities are offered by the University.

Green Initiatives

The University has taken up green initiative to develop plantation and greenery in the campus Coordinated by the Rector, Prof. H. Sudarsana Rao. The Rural Development Trust (RDT), Ananthapuramu has planted about 3000 plants of different species in the campus recently. To water these plants, 20,000 litres per day is required which is quite a huge quantity. JNTUA campus is suffering from acute water shortage due to lowest rainfall in the region. The underground water is also a rare commodity as the ground water table is at depths greater than 600m. However, the University campus generates huge amount of sewage water from different hostels and other buildings. To demonstrate and encourage the systems of environmental protection and sustainability to the students, the University took the responsibility to save this water by installing a 125kLD sewage treatment plant for Rs.42.5 Lakhs in the campus.

The government is encouraging to implement solar power utilization due to severe power problem in Andhra Pradesh state. This region has almost 330 sunny days in a year and has got great potential to exploit the abundant solar energy. To overcome power scarcity and to utilize non conventional energy sources as a measure to environmental protection and sustainability, the University is in the process to install Solar Photo Voltaic for Rs.800 Lakhs over the roofs of University Administrative block and over the buildings of JNTUA College of Engineering, Ananthapuramu.

Curriculum

Curriculum revision is an extremely important part of a university's mission. During the World War II, Engineering curricula fully embraced a practical oriented approach. Later in 1990s, with drastic increase in the number of colleges, curriculum is revised to provide increased attention to theoretical approach which led to sharp reduction in the time and coursework devoted to practical skills. The impact of transformation of engineering curricula is evident.

Our innovative academic curriculum is constantly updated, enabling students to explore new fields of study and provide them with skills needed to make them suitable for fast changing needs of the global employment and industrial scenario. JNTUA, in anticipation of the changing needs of future graduates has redesigned its engineering programmes. The designed programmes will prepare its graduates to be globally competitive.
