What is Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI)?

The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System (LLI) is a small-group, supplementary intervention program designed for children who struggle with reading and writing. It is designed to supplement, not substitute for, the small group instruction that children receive in the classroom.

What campuses received LLI materials?

• All elementary campuses received three LLI systems.

 

What’s the difference between the three systems?

• There are three systems that are available for LLI. Each supports instruction at different levels on the Fountas & Pinnell text gradient, A-Z.

○ Orange System: Levels A to C  [DRA A/1 – 3]

○ Green System: Levels A to J [DRA A/1 – 18]

○ Blue System: Levels C to N [DRA 3 – 30]

• The right book can make or break instruction. Each LLI system includes a collection of brand new carefully leveled books for use in instruction.

○ Orange System: 70 books

○ Green System: 110 books

○ Blue System: 120 books

 

When will the bilingual materials be available for LLI?

• By the end of September, there will be bilingual materials available for K-2 bilingual students.

• A staff development will be offered to teachers when the Spanish system is complete.

 

Can bilingual students in grades 3-5 receive English intervention with LLI?

• Absolutely!  Look at Grades 3-5 bilingual special education students’ DRA and determine if the LLI intervention would benefit the student.

• The bilingual student will need to receive services for which he/she is ARDed.

 

Who can implement LLI?

• Only a special education teacher that has gone to the district training for LLI can implement the systems.

• Only teachers that have been inserviced on the bilingual materials can implement the Spanish intervention. 

 

Which students can receive LLI instruction?

• Special Education students in need of reading intervention based on assessment data, IEP goals and objectives, and reading behaviors

• Special Education Bilingual students in Grades 3-5 with a large discrepancy between their EDL and their DRA reading levels.

 

Where does LLI instruction take place?

• Special Education students who are in K-2 can receive the instruction in their classroom in their native languages or in a pull-out setting per ARD decision.

• Students in Grades 3-5 may be pulled out per ARD decision or receive in-class support

 

How many students can be in an LLI group?

• Instruction should be provided to groups of no more than three to ensure close observation and intensive teaching interactions.

 

How long does a lesson take?

•  Daily 30-45 minute lessons that provide instruction in reading, writing, and phonics/word study

 

Can grades be given for LLI instruction?

• A rubric has been given to teachers to help them give grades for reading and writing LLI instruction.

 

Does LLI writing instruction match TAKS writing instruction?

• No

• LLI students will receive writing instruction during writer's workshop in his/her classroom in preparation for TAKS writing.

 

  Will there be additional reading assessments for special education students?

• Students who are receiving instruction with LLI will be assessed using the Special Education Reading Assessment by a special educator 4 times a year to ensure proper placement in the LLI Systems.

• Students receiving in-class support will be assessed by a special educator twice a year using the Special Education Reading Assessment.

• All Special Education Reading Assessments will be entered into Eduphoria.
