It is a pleasure to have you as one of my students throughout the school year. During this course, you will be introduced to a new language and a new culture. In addition, you will begin to write, read, speak, and comprehend the Spanish language. It is my goal to provide you the most proficient practices to help you success in further Spanish classes. Learning a second language requires a lot of practice, so I encourage you to apply your new knowledge as much as possible inside and outside the classroom. Please, do not be afraid of making mistakes. It is part of the learning process. I am positive that we are going to have a great school year. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to do so. Objetivos generales:The students will learn the basic Spanish grammar concepts. The students will learn new vocabulary words that will help them to establish a basic conversation in Spanish. The students will be introduced to different cultural perspectives about diverse topics. Uniform Grading Policy:Tests/Quizzes/Projects/Oral Exams60%Home work/Class work 20%Class Participation/ Other20%Total100%Grading Scale:90-100%=APlus or Minus will also be given.80-89%=BStudents earn their grades based70-79%=Con cumulative scores.60-69%=D00-59%=FQuarter grades are not carried over. Each quarter is an individual grade. For semester grades add 2 quarters and divide by 2 to get the semester grade.Each semester has its own cumulative Final. The final is part of all Tests/Quizzes for the current quarter, and it is not worth more than one point per question. Each semester final is usually 200 questions or less and may include a writing portion.College Admission Requirements:This class is a college preparation course. CSUs and UCs require two years of study a language different than English of the same language. A grade of 75% or higher is recommended in order to move on to Spanish II. Homework Policy: We do 99% of the written work in class. We go over the answers in class. We turn in the work on the same class. Otherwise, home work is checked at the beginning of each class. Homework is due at the beginning of each class. I recommend students to complete their homework before turning it in. Incomplete homework will not receive any credit. There will be no half credits. I encourage you to complete your homework the best you can. You will not be penalized for making mistakes. You will receive credit for making an effort. If you follow my advice, you will get a perfect score for the homework portion. Please, make sure you write your name on the homework. Otherwise, you will not receive any credit for it.For excused absences, work is due the next class meeting. Check Aeries or call a friend for missed assignments. Most of the students’ homework is to read, review, recite, and remember concepts and vocabulary as well as online flashcards, power points &practice quizzes. Please, download the app Autentico to your phones by going to the app store. Tests and Quizzes:Students are tested every week. Tests and quizzes will be on Thursdays and Fridays. Test make ups will be given in class upon return from an excused absence, and it can also be scheduled within the following week. Teacher reserves the right to pop-quiz. No retakes.Extra credit: Extra credit is rarely offered in this course. Extra credit is not meant to replace missing or incomplete assignments. I recommend you to keep up by completing your homework on time, studying for the weekly quizzes, and to participate in class activities. Class Participation:For students to be successful in Spanish class, they are expected to participate in class activities. The student participation will be evaluated using a rubric at the end of each quarter. The rubric is based on level of engagement in the classroom discussions and activities, their use of Spanish in the classroom during the class period, the students’ preparation to class, and the students need to listen and to be attentive during class activities. The students will receive a rubric which explains in more detail how class participation is evaluated.Suggested Materials: Besides the Spanish textbook and workbook.English/Spanish Dictionary is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!Ruled paper at all times, white out and plenty of pens and pencilsKleenex1.5” Binder to hold Spanish work, handouts and Spanish workbookOne 70 page note book for listening activities throughout the yearDividers for the binder (one pack has 5)A Planner All school rules and policies will be followed in class at all times. All uniform classroom procedures will be followed:Eat your snacks prior to class. Do not chew gum, eat or drink soda in class. Only water is allowed in class. Raise your hand to talk or to leave your assigned seats. Be on time. You should be on your seat ready to learn when the bell rings. If you are late to class, do not interrupt the lesson, sit down and read the “Daily Agenda” to catch up.Use the restroom prior to class. Groom yourself and apply makeup prior to class.Be prepared. Bring your textbook and workbook everyday to class. Do not sharpen your pencils in the middle of a lesson.Be on task. Complete all your class assignments in timely manner. Use kind words.No electronic devices. Texting during class time is not allowed at all.. Keep your area clean. No writing or doodling on desks.Obey all school rules including the dress code. Consequences: Teacher keeps track of all discipline.Verbal Warning.Change seats & notation in AeriesPhone call home or email to parents& notation in AeriesFor severe cases, referral and may be escorted out of room by security and notation in AeriesParent Notification:Mrs. Castro prefers email!
