Apuntes: Los verbos que terminan en –AR

Apuntes: –AR Verbs

A) The Infinitive of Verbs

In Spanish, there are verbs that end in –AR, -ER, and –IR. When verbs have these endings, they are in their infinitive form, or the “to ___” form. The infinitive is the form of the verb that you would find in a Spanish dictionary. Here are some –AR verbs in the infinitive.

1. Estudiar

2. Enseñar

3. Necesitar

4. Tomar

B) Verb Conjugation

We must change, or conjugate, the infinitive of the verb to tell who is doing the action. Here are the steps for conjugating regular –AR verbs in the present tense:

1. Remove the –AR ending

2. Add the following endings for the singular and plural subject pronouns:

|Singular |Plural |

|Subject Pronoun |Verb Ending |Subject Pronoun |Verb Ending |

| | | | |

|Yo | |Nosotros/as | |

| | | | |

|Tú | |Vosotros/as | |

| | | | |

|Él, Ella, Usted | |Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes | |

• In Spanish, the subject pronoun (yo, tú, etc.) does not always have to be used because the verb endings tell who is doing the action.

o Use the subject pronoun to emphasize who is doing the action or to clarify if the subject is not obvious by the verb ending.

▪ The subject may not be obvious for the verb forms of él, ella, usted, and ellos, ellas, ustedes.

|Infinitivo: estudiar |

|Significación: |

|Yo | |Nosotros/as | |

|Tú | |Vosotros/as | |

|Él, ella, usted | |Ellos, ellas, ustedes | |

|Infinitivo: enseñar |

|Significación: |

|Yo | |Nosotros/as | |

|Tú | |Vosotros/as | |

|Él, ella, usted | |Ellos, ellas, ustedes | |

|Infinitivo: necesitar |

|Significación: |

|Yo | |Nosotros/as | |

|Tú | |Vosotros/as | |

|Él, ella, usted | |Ellos, ellas, ustedes | |

|Infinitivo: tomar |

|Significación: |

|Yo | |Nosotros/as | |

|Tú | |Vosotros/as | |

|Él, ella, usted | |Ellos, ellas, ustedes | |

• When a verb is conjugated in the present tense, it can be translated to mean that the subject does the action (Yo enseño español. = I teach Spanish.), is in the process of doing the action (Él estudia para el examen = He is studying for the test.), or will do the action in the near future (Nosotros tomamos el autobús mañana. = We will take the bus tomorrow.).

• Some verbs, such as necesitar, can be followed by other verbs.

o Example: Tú necesitas estudiar. _______________________________________________________

o In this case, the first verb is conjugated and the second verb is in the infinitive.

▪ “When two verbs go walking, the first does the talking.”
