Conjugation of -ar verbs

Conjugation of -ar verbs

• Infinitives are the basic verb without any specific subject to let you know who is performing that verb. In English the infinitive is formed by using the word "to".

o to walk, to talk, to sing, to dance, to work, to study, etc.

• In Spanish, infinitives always end in either "-ar", "-er",or "-ir".

o caminar, hablar, cantar, bailar, trabajar, estudiar, etc.

• Also in Spanish a verb has two parts: the stem and it's ending.

• Hablar = habl + ar

(stem) (ending)

habl + ar

habl + ar

o (stem) (ending)

• "Conjugation" means to change the infinitive so that it fits with the appropriate subject.

The -ar verb endings for each subject are

|Singular subject |Ending |Plural subject |Ending |

|yo |-o |nosotros |-amos |

|tú |-as |vosotros (only used in Spain) |-ais |

|él |-a |ellos |-an |

|ella |-a |ellas |-an |

|usted |-a |ustedes |-an | |

• To conjugate an -ar verb, drop the -ar ending and add the new ending that fits with your subject.

Yo hablar = Yo habl - ar + o = Yo hablo
