Report on East Midlands Meeting – 30th January 2017

O-Safe – Clubs were asked to ensure that the O-safe document was updated in October 2016 and is now available at . It contains clauses that should be incorporated/referenced in club and association constitutions. East Midlands will look to incorporate this in to the constitution at the next AGM.

Urban League Events – It was agreed that there were 2 events per club scheduled for this year’s urban league and it is hoped that this can continue in to the future. It some clubs there may be more of a challenge to find suitable areas/ officials. The urban league event at Belper had a very good turnout as part of the UK Urban League. The UK Urban League did introduce a new class of Hypervets (M/W75+) which was run at Belper and discussions are underway as to whether this class should be incorporated in to the East Midlands Urban League.

Contactless Dibbers – The current status is that Events and Competitions Committee had recommended that if events have contactless dibbers (as well as normal dibbers), then they must always provide a number of contactless dibbers for hire. The Board had not had time to approve this so it is still not approved as such. One concern brought up by John Hurley was whether this applied to all events, even level D. The committee felt that it should apply to all Level C and above events, but not for level D.

Planners & Controllers Conference - set for 4th March at Charnwood College. Invites have been sent to all level B controllers, and other controllers and planners are welcome. So far have had 8 LEI. 4 DVO and 1 LOG attendees register.

Mappers Workshop - David Olivant is looking at holding an experienced mappers workshop in the Autumn (it will target the experienced not beginners).

Planners Course - Mike Gardner is hoping to out on a Planners Course in the Spring for DVO. If anyone else in region is interested please let him know.

Junior Squad – The squad have been very active over the last few months. Related to this the JIRCS 2018 is under investigation by DVO to identify accommodation and venues for both individual and relay events.

Future Events:

i) 12 March 2017 – CompassSport Cup Round – LOG – Burwell and Haugham – Please share transport wherever possible.

ii) 18 March 2018 – Midland Champs 2018 – LEI Belvoir

Future Possible Events

i) EM Score Champs – need a club to volunteer to host this next year

ii) Junior Inter-Regional Champs 2018 – DVO looking to host

iii) British Sprints / Middles 2019 – LEI / DVO

iv) 17 March 2019 – CompassSport Cup Heat 2019 – NOC

v) Midland Champs 2020 – DVO

vi) CompassSport Cup Final 2021 – Are EMOA interested in hosting?

vii) British / British Relays 2021 – North Wales has proposed some areas which could be used. EMOA need to decide if this is a practical proposition.

viii) Midland Champs 2022 - NOC

Registration at Events – NOC had surveyed recent events and noticed very few folk were registering late at events. They wondered whether it was worth cutting back the time for registration at events.

BO Rules Update – There is an updated BO rules document now available on the website.

BO Board - At the BO Board on December 8th there was a lot of talk about budget issues as Sport England funding continues to be reduced. At present the sport gets around £550,000 from Sport England which still equates to £50 per member. However, as Sport England funding is further reduced orienteering will have to either cut back further or find ways to get the money (levies, membership fees). The BO Board are proposing no further increase in membership fees or event levy in 2018.  The EMOA Committee felt it would be better to increase fees by a small amount each year rather than have occasional large increases.

BO Strategic Plan - Consultation is due to take place (expected to be out by end of Jan) of a new BO Strategic Plan.

Coaching - Hilary Palmer attended the Annual Coaching Conference and there are a lot of presentations available on the BO website under Coaching / Coach Support.

Dates and venues for future meetings - All meetings to be held at the Pace Room, St Mary’s Church, Clifton Village, Nottinghamshire at 7.30 p.m. The next committee meeting is scheduled for Monday April 3rd 2017. The following meeting is scheduled for Monday June 19th 2017. The EMOA AGM is scheduled for Monday September 18th 2017.
