Provide a brief description of the project and its activities:

Lincoln Park’s rich legacy is best symbolized by the South Park Presbyterian Church (SPPC) façade. The SPPC is of national significance for its Greek Revival design. Built in 1855 and registered on the National Historic Register in 1972, SPPC supported an active congregation that heard Abraham Lincoln speak in 1861 on route to his first inauguration. After the President’s assassination, the local park and subsequently the neighborhood were renamed after him. In 1992, the church burned down, but the stunning façade remains.

LPCCD seeks to preserve the church façade to its original grand structure and to create a performance area and park with the open space behind the building. The renovation of the façade is a major step toward realizing the transformation of Lincoln Park.

What outcomes are anticipated from completing the project and its activities?

• The façade will provide a visual link to the other landmarks along Broad Street.

• The façade will serve as a gateway to the neighborhood and to the City as visitors enter Newark from Port Newark/Elizabeth.

• The open space planned for the lot behind the façade will be available to the public and will serve as an outdoor performance area and park for the planned Museum of African American Music.

• The green space improvement will connect the structure, now gated and derelict, to Lincoln Park residents and contribute to the overall quality of life for Lincoln Park community.
