Levels of Questioning - Mrs. Perez

Levels of Questioning

Level One Question: Level One questions can be answered using facts in the text or easily accessible information in other texts. They are fact-based. This type of question is designed to be simple enough for all students to join in the conversation, yet stimulating enough that some thinking will begin. Furthermore, this question should be general enough to allow for many different answers.

Examples:

What does Roger try to take from Mrs. Jones?

Why does Victor sign up to take French?

Level Two Question: Level Two questions can be answered after interpreting or analyzing the text by drawing inferences using evidence provided in the text (and some evidence from personal experience.) These questions should focus on the different parts of the text: separate aspects of the argument, or different sections of the textbook chapter. These questions should allow for different judgments, but you should still insist that further evidence is provided for their opinionated answers.

Examples:

How does Julia feel about the way people mispronounced her name?

Why does Mrs. Jones not turn Roger into the police?

Level Three Question: Level Three questions are open-ended. They ask you to go beyond the text. These questions will provoke discussion of an abstract idea or issue. They will focus on one strand of the issue that the text addresses, then apply it to something outside of the text.

Examples:

What is the value in learning from our mistakes?

Why is it important to be who we are?

NO 2nd PERSON

(you, your, you’re, yourself, yourselves)

USED IN QUESTIONS OF ANY LEVEL!!!
