Summer Research Course Homework Assignment

Welcome to Scarsdale High School’s new Science Research Program! Together, over the next three years, we’ll be taking what is bound to be an exciting journey (for all of us).

To get started on the journey, it’s important to begin to think about topics that might interest you. Start by searching your memory banks for that one special topic in any science course or experience that neither you nor your teacher had time to explore. Ask your parents about any science questions, ideas, or interests that they remember you having. Go back to those chapters in an old textbook, about which you wanted to learn more. Watch science TV shows to see if anything sparks your interest. This is a golden opportunity to try to identify something you’re really interested in.

Next, you need to skim through a number of publications, and find 10 articles on one PARTICULAR topic that is of interest to you. These articles don’t need to be from scientific journals, but rather from popular science magazines, like Discover or Scientific American or from newspapers (such as the Tuesday “Science Times” section of the New York Times). Xerox a copy of the article and put it into a notebook. Then, for each article you must write three questions that you would like to investigate further (If you can’t think of three questions, find another article!); then on a single page, in approximately 100 words, summarize the article and write a brief reaction to it; also, at the top of the page, indicate the title, author, periodical in which it was published, and date of its publication.

(Obviously, the articles should not be briefs or abstracts!)

Lastly for each article, using a yellow highlighter, identify the scientist and location of the laboratory mentioned in the article. Keep your copy of the article and your summary in the front of your notebook for now, and we will reorganize everything in September.

The second part of this assignment is to send Ms. Schoenbrun your e-mail address over the summer. She can be contacted at: brschoen@ If you have any questions before school ends you may contact her at school in room 293 or call 721-2314. Otherwise, just send an e-mail. She will be away for part of this summer, so don’t worry if she doesn’t reply immediately.

The next three years should be a terrific experience. We look forward to working with each of you in the Science Research Program!!! Have a great summer and we hope to see you all in September.

Beth Schoenbrun

Director of Science Research
