Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year! Last year marked another great year of accomplishments; not only was Union High School math teacher Rebecka Peterson named State Teacher of the Year, but we had 11 national merit finalists and Tamarah Danzy, an 8th grade science teacher, was a Milken Award recipient. Despite Year 2 of an unpredictable pandemic, we persevered, and it was another one for the record books.

We look forward to welcoming your child back to Union Public Schools. Our goal with this "Back to School" guide is to make your child's transition as seamless as possible. While we are optimistic this will be another exceptional year, we will continue to monitor the health and safety landscape. In light of recent high-profile attacks at schools across our nation, please know that we work closely with local, state and federal law enforcement to update our security measures to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Visit for the latest updates.

Please note new school start and end times on page three. Change is never easy, but we appreciate your flexibility as we work to ensure all students get to school on time. This solution seemed the best compromise given the ongoing bus driver shortage.

These are exciting times to be a part of Union Public Schools. We are nearing the completion of the Fine Arts Building at the north end of the football stadium, along with the addition of a new stateof-the-art scoreboard. Preparations are already underway for the next 5-year bond as the district looks at making significant changes to the configuration of the Union 6th/7th Grade Center.

The continued success of your child is our primary focus. We will remain vigilant in our pursuit of the district's mission: "To graduate 100% of students college and career-ready."

On behalf of Union's teachers and administrators, WELCOME BACK!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kirt Hartzler, Superintendent
