Sarah Baker Leonard Tupper Awards
Request for Nominations
Shaw University Divinity School is now accepting nominations for the 2008 Sarah Baker Leonard Tupper Awards to be presented at the 25th Annual Women's Conference, "From Purpose to Power to Praise," September 26-27, 2008.
The Sarah Baker Leonard Tupper Awards are named in honor of the co-founder of Shaw University. A strong proponent of women's rights and education, Mrs. Tupper was a pioneer and visionary who demonstrated courage and spiritual fortitude. This award is given in honor of her memory and in recognition of women who continue in her spirit. Three awards will be given at the 25th Annual Women’s Conference, one in each of the following categories: Laywoman, Clergywoman, and Undergraduate Woman.
Award Criteria
Laywoman Award: Nominees for the Sarah Baker Leonard Tupper Laywoman Award must be living Christian women who are members in good standing with their local church. Nominees must be laywomen who exemplify faith in God. They may or may not hold official leadership positions or ministerial titles, but are individuals who commit their passion, time, talent, and energy to fostering the spiritual growth and leadership development of African American Christian women and girls.
Clergywoman Award: Nominees for the Sarah Baker Leonard Tupper Clergywoman Award must be living Christian women who are ordained clergy serving in official leadership positions in North Carolina Christian congregations or faith-based organizations. We welcome nominations of women who are serving as pastors and as associate pastors/ministers as well as women who are serving in leadership positions within faith-based organizations (such as nonprofits). Nominees must be women who exemplify faith in God and who commit their passion, time, talent, and energy to fostering the spiritual growth and leadership development of African American Christian women and girls.
Undergraduate Woman Award: Nominees for the Sarah Baker Leonard Tupper Undergraduate Woman Award must be Christian women who are undergraduates currently enrolled at Shaw University. Nominees must be seniors during the 2008-2009 academic year. They must hold a minimum 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. and be active in their local congregation and on the Shaw University campus. They must be women who exemplify faith in God and who commit their passion, time, talent, and energy to fostering the spiritual growth and leadership development of African American Christian women and girls.
Nomination and Selection Process:
The 2008 Sarah Baker Leonard Tupper Awards will recognize women who are committed to the uplift, development, and education of African American women. Nominations for the Laywoman and Clergywoman Awards will be accepted from Christian congregations in North Carolina. Nominations for the Undergraduate Woman Award will be accepted from Shaw University faculty and staff.
The award recipients will be selected by a committee made up of faculty, students, and alumni from Shaw University Divinity School. An additional award will be made for an outstanding Shaw University undergraduate student who exemplifies the spirit of Mrs. Tupper. Each awardee and all nominees will be honored at a luncheon banquet during the 25th Annual Women's Conference, featuring our keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Cecelia Bryant.
