Daily Maths Tasks

I Can Count to Twenty

Ice Cream Sharing

Watch the Numberblocks episode `I Can Count to Twenty':. uk/iplayer/episode/m0006s5q /numberblocks-series-4-i-cancount-to-twenty

How many different ways can you count to twenty?

Use cubes or square pieces of Lego to build a teen number. What number have you made? Talk to an adult about what one more and one less would be then build both numbers and then line them up to check. Repeat with other numbers.

For this activity, draw yourself two ice cream cones, like the example below. You will also need some pompoms (or use small cherry tomatoes or grapes), some kitchen tongs or tweezers and two 1-6 dice.

Roll your dice, add the numbers together and then count out a matching number of `cherries'. Using your tongs pick up your cherries and share them equally between the two ice creams. Remember to make sure both ice cream have a fair share.

Further Challenge Draw three, four or five ice cream cones and repeat the activity. Which quantities can you share fairly? Why is this?

Further Challenge Can you continue the game beyond 20? What patterns can you find?

Favourite Sandwich Pictogram

Lighthouse Time Challenge

Today we are going to think about our favourite sandwich fillings and you are going to create your own pictogram. For this activity you will need to ask as many family and friends as you can what their favourite sandwich filling is, out of the following: cheese, ham, tuna, jam, peanut butter, other.

On the pages below is a pictogram template and pictures of each filling for you to use. Print these out or draw your own. Use the template to record everyone's favourite sandwich fillings. Miss Harris has already added her favourite filling to the pictogram to get you started and you can see that there is one picture on it because one person (Miss Harris) likes this filling the best.

Play this game with an adult or big brother or sister. For this game you will need a timer and some red and white construction blocks or you could cut out some squares of red and white paper.

Challenge a member of your family to see who can build the tallest lighthouse in 30 seconds. Your cubes or paper pieces need to go in a red, white pattern.

When the 30 seconds is up compare your lighthouses:

Have you used more or fewer bricks in your lighthouse?

Which sandwich filling is the most popular? Which sandwich filling is the least popular? How do you know?

What is the difference between the number of bricks used in the lighthouses?

Play and compare again.

Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch Grab

Moana Dance Along

This week we are practising making arch shapes. What letters can you think of that have this shape in them? Can you make these letters in the air?

Practise making this shape whilst listening to the song `Beside the Seaside': W8f hEPSLmfo Do large full arches with both hands one way then the other, then make each hand make an arch.

Once you have practised making arches in the air practise on paper. Draw a lighthouse in the middle of a piece of paper and then using a blue pen or pencil practise making the arch shape by forming arches all around it.

Play this game in your garden or living room with a member of your family. All you need is some items of play food or use some tins and packets from your kitchen cupboards, two hoops (or similar as bases) and two footballs.

One of you is going to be Mrs Grindling the other is going to be one of the pesky seagulls.

Place the food items in a pile in the centre of the room or outside space and place the home bases an equal distance from food items at opposite sides of the space.

The aim of the game is to dribble your balls with your feet as fast as you can to move to the centre of the playing area, collect one of the food items and then bring it back to your base. Play continues until there are no items left to be collected in the middle ? the winner is the one with the most food items!

See if you can follow the dance moves with Oti Mabuse from Strictly Come Dancing:

At the end of the game count out the food items. Who won Mrs Grindling or the seagulls?
